Why I'm downgrading to a flip phone.

Dang, I'm 45 years old and have STILL never had a smartphone. I'm an "old soul" you could say, I don't get along well with technology, at all. All I need a phone for is to talk and text, I don't need it for the internet or to be spied on. Someone recently handed me their smartphone to enter my phone number and I felt more lost than a toddler in Disneyland without a parent lol.

Yes, I am so free without fb. Also my 14 year old needed a phone while she was alway during school or any emergency, so I got her a flip phone, she is totally fine with it…

Definitely good to push back against big tech desire to get us all addicted to their devices as possible, but smart phones have so many more practical uses if you can control your screen time. Music, podcasts, navigation, messaging, good camera, workout tracking, notes, etc. I've found it useful to use apps like Opal, offscreen and One Sec to control screen time and access to distracting unproductive apps, also adding a B&W filter to make scrolling less addictive. I've seen my screen time go from 4.5 hours a day to 2.5 in the past year

Most people will think you are crazy. But that was the right move. Kudos! :) For me... Man ad long I can communicate with my friends, and watch some vids, I'm good. It's crazy most smart phones are a price of a car....

Im going to a flip but going to a tablet for my social media, hoping to separate the 2 and cut down on dependency on both.

If I didn’t have a smart phone I wouldn’t know you got a flip phone .

I’ve had a I phone for years and I have never used social media ever .

I 100% agree that social media is a toxic wasteland, no arguments! I don't use it. I have Facebook, and never post. I don't use anything else. That being said, if you have done some serious travelling in your vehicle, a smartphone is necessary if you don't know the area very well. Google Maps and Android Auto are invaluable. I don't watch the news on my phone. I study things, read things, interest and history and whatever. I am not texting 5 million people. But I get it. To each their own. I don't upgrade all the time either. Ditch social media, yeah, do that though.

I have a iPhone but when my contact runs out I'm going to get a flip phone. There's a lot to be said about flips.

A flip phone does its job and helps you

A smart phones job is to prevent, you from doing your job. And distracts you, for its own companies gain.

I think its no coincidence how all the service providers won't allow
prepaid (every 90 day refill service plans ) on Android phones .
Tracfone offers every month prepaid on Android , but its still more money .

They know they would loose to much profit if they offered a
truly prepaid 90 day plan for Android .

I Don't care , my tracfone non Android is dirt cheap at only 20.00
every 90 days , plus the current 4g non Android flips do basic Internet and apps .
I ain't ever paying crazy money for service.

I have a smartphone since the first iPhone came out, Androids and iOSesss, and I never had FacebookInstagramTikTokTwitter….well ok. I had Twitter, but there are a lot of lunatics over there so I quitted that very fast. So… there is a big difference between having a smartphone and having/suffering social media. I use mine for navigation, banking, paying, emailing and staying in touch with my kids trough WhatsApp. No more. Then it is doable.

if they had a phone with a navigation and maybe a music app as the only advanced feature i would downgrade

you should try to use a kids phone for 30 day like kids bark phone or the pinwheel phone

I downgraded to a flip and use the Wi-Fi hotspot feature to my iPhone 8+ an iPod touch.

EVERY “smart phone” I ever owned was a buggy mess… it was never worth the asking price too… I couldn’t care less for them anymore.

Here is my tip for all of this.
Today for almost every smartphone on the market there is an internet tablet with most if not all of the same capabilities of a smartphone. Why make one device do everything?
Also, if social media is driving you coca nuts delete the social media apps.
For those who look into the details you will notice how most if not all of the functionalities of the social media apps are becoming or already are available on most social media websites themselves and that is regardless if you have a smartphone or a flip phone.

Every September people are ready to get their pocket shrink , turn their health down , circadian rhythm no more , jjust to see likes and whatsapp forwarded as received messages with no use. no contribution to environment , society , themselves and of course feeling so called proud for being tech assholes.

When I graduate high school I'll give up my LG G7(I am in Grade 10 as of now)
Because when I graduate I'll be more focused on getting my dream job and getting married/starting a family and to do that I'll have to give up my smartphone
It's just something I'll keep as a teenager
I'll figure it out because there will be some problems I'll have if I give it up such as my contacts and music but then again I know ways and I'll figure it out

Plus with the constant increased surveillance on citizens by the government through our smartphones is bad

I got rid of my sidekick a long time ago because boost got rid of the old network. It was the best phone I've ever had. But honestly I would never go back to it. I equate social media to gossip, which is boring, I don't get why people would waste away so many hours just looking at what everyone is doing instead of having fun with a hobby or developing a skill. There's so much shit you can do in real life you will never run out of things to do before you get old and die.

snapchat and texting made me feel lonely because very few people texted me first, now i am using a flip phone for 5 days! now it takes a long time to send a text i only text to respond, i call instead. i don’t feel as lonely i am surrounded by family, your online friends don’t matter.

I'm so happy for all who are happy. I'm not gonna give up my smartphone but I do miss the satisfying feeling of slamming my flip phone closed whenever I wanted to hang up on somebody 😆

seriously… I’m 1 fragile and unreliably finicky smart phone inconvenience, glitch, lag, or mistake away from doin away w smart phones, all together, and goin back to a simple, less distracting, less expensive, less time consuming, more reliable, longer lasting and more durably made land line.

I use a flip phone and a smartwatch the flip phone gives me the hotspot the smartwatch keeps me up with important emails then once I have enough time I will get to it when I go home on a computer

I would love to downgrade to a flip phone so that I don't spend so much time scrolling through media and such. However, I would still like this flip phone to be reliable for receiving texts and calls. Do you guys have any recommendations for they type of flip phone I should get?

I’d downgrade too if I didn’t draw on my phone with my finger to make art (I refuse to use a tablet and styluses hurt my carpal tunnel).
