Observations anywhere are important. If I had to rebuild my house (which I bought like it is) it would totally be situated better for sun/no sun, gardens and more! Hindsight is always 20-20. But, you do what you can with what you have. Perfect video!
ОтветитьI found a shovel under the dirt in my yard! It still works!😂
ОтветитьThe Sun is # 1! Water is #2 (easier to move than the Sun). Microclimates are essential too.
Ответить💯 I didn’t think much of observing until this year too excited to grow. This year observation doubled my harvest because I could change my design to capture the solar energy to the fullest
ОтветитьNice to see a long shot of your driveway. I remember when not even pigs could make a big enough dent in the brambles. You and Michelle had to go hand to hand with it. It's amazing how much more beautiful the land is now. It's nice to see it denuded a bit because it's really going to be lush in Spring. I know you only see the projects left to be done but you have already created a major impact that will make that home place better for hundreds of years.
ОтветитьAnother great video!!
Very important info!
Just ordered some Bone Sauce. Rice knife will be next. 😊
Ответитьamen to all of what you said
ОтветитьGreat info ! Thank You & Have a blessed New Year !
ОтветитьThank you Billy for the video. You are so awesome and a true friend and a real Knowledgeable homesteader !
ОтветитьThank you for the valuable knowledge you impart. Since I have started watching you I have learned we made some mistakes. Hindsight! Going forward we are doing exactly as you advise.
ОтветитьObservation is key to make the greatest effect with the least change. Great video!
ОтветитьAny idea why majority of vegetables at local grocery stores are subpar or beyond fresh window? 7$ for 18 eggs here in Missouri. Frozen veggies probably 50% less in stock than usual.
ОтветитьAlways good stuff! Thank you!
ОтветитьGod designed us with two eyes two ears and only one mouth hahaha.
Thanks Billy, blessings to you and your house 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Observation is an unspoken given.....at least that's what I thought. I've become much more aware of everything, and everyone, since I've started gardening and keeping bees. Appreciate the video.
ОтветитьGlad you mentioned the water tank and sun. I always wondered whether it was better to get sun to keep from freezing or not get sun to keep stuff from growing in the water
Ответитьthanks man..great perspective.
ОтветитьOK Billy, what happened to the rooster ? Half way through the video he magically got quiet 🤐. Hope the girls don’t miss him too much ! 😢
ОтветитьSatellite dishes make great solar reflectors for cooking and other things you can heat.
ОтветитьKeeping a good lookout helps in more ways than one.
ОтветитьGreat video, great info, couldnt agree more!! My husband thinks I'm just particular but its actually that I prefer to be intentional. These considerations equal success and make alllll the difference. Well worth the time 🙂 Thanks for such a great review, it will help a lot of people. Happy new year 😊
ОтветитьNot to mention paying attention to people with experience in doing what you want to do. For example you said that when the pigs of less things that they will want to eat they will tear up the ground alot faster. I didn't know that. I feel smarter now thank you Billy. I have a quick curiosity do you have more than one of those Legalize Freedom hoodies or is it just your favorite one cuz I have noticed that you have been wearing it a lot lately in the videos. See I observed that hahaha. I hope that y'all have a good and fun New years Eve. Have fun take care
ОтветитьThank you very much. I'm learning.
Thanks.
Ps, as an aside .That parabolic satellite dish can make a very powerful passive solar cooker, with the help of a little mylar and glue art project
I saw one turned into a burning mirror, which made a bit of kindling flash into flames in my hand in miliiseconds on a cold spring day
Wondering what state you are located in? I ask because I am in New England where it is cold Dec thru April.
ОтветитьAmen, Billy. I realized the past year I've ben doing a lot of reacting the past year. I need to slow down and do a bit more observing so we can be more proactive.
ОтветитьObservation, I have never considered observing my position to this extent.
ОтветитьThis is another good one Billy. Observation is key. We see, hear and smell but do not always observe the world around us. What are the seasonal patterns of sun, water and plants. Do the birds tell us of a predator near by that could be a chicken issue or just trying to find a mate? Do you smell anaerobic compost, septic problems or need to tune up the tractor because it's running too rich? To quote Sherlock Holmes in A Scandal in Bohemia, "You see, but do not observe. The distinction is clear."
ОтветитьI wish I had understood this concept when we built out house. We dug a ditch to defer the field flood water around the house and in the process created ½ acre of dry arid ground that is useless to us. We'll spend a considerable amount of money fixing it this year.
ОтветитьThanks Billy, Your knowledge is a real eye opener.. I often overlook the obvious. God Bless!
ОтветитьGreat informative video my friend. Observation is key in every aspect of our lives, whether the things on our property or when we are out and about. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻😇👍🏻🙌🏻
ОтветитьI have found old satellite photos of the property that I want, and I can see where all the old buildings were and the trash piles are now. It’s part of my ‘plan’ to bring the price down to something I can afford.
ОтветитьBilly this an AWESOME Topic & EXTREMELY necessary! We have only been on this new Farm a few months and have depended on these skills to teach us about the Land! The Thunderstorms show us water flow patterns, Observing 24 hr cycles of Sun etc! This life Is HARD work but it's The Absolute Best life to live! As usual, All of us come away from your discussions a little wiser & Encouraged!
ОтветитьSo true, let's see this baby get to 100k views even though it's not a "sexy" video ;)
ОтветитьWe moved onto our property almost two years ago and we waited to start putting in permanent structures for a year. Even with that we are still making adjustments and changing plans do to water run off in storms.
You are so right about the trash! We have found so many crazy things and when we walk the property we take buckets with us for the ‘treasures’ we will find. Bowling ball, fire hose, lots of car parts, carpet and so much more. The crazy thing is the dump is free 🙄 we have filled a dumpster and still find stuff.
Thank you for all the great advice and I plan to implement your fruit tree guild advice this Spring.
Happy new year
Ответить👍🧐
ОтветитьThe Marine Corps Planning Process (MCPP) teaches the OODA Loop...Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. And it is a Loop...keep going around the loop constantly. It can, and should, be applied to literally everything we do...designing permapasture, driving in traffic, moving through crowds, sports, hunting, fishing, troubleshooting machinery, you name it.
ОтветитьI know I'm not on topic but does anyone know if the bone sause will keep goats away from fruit trees?
ОтветитьI've owned my property for 6 years and I'm still finding scrap metal in the strangest places. My plans for my property have changed three times because of observation.
ОтветитьThanks Billy for this very useful information. When we bought our place back 35 years ago, I knew it would be the last place we ever live, so I set out to mark shadow points during late Dec and late june. Then I knew where to plant certain crops in small gardens that looked more like flower plots. Learn and know the shadow paterms of your trees during the seasons, and better plan for what you can grow and where. Know and understand the difference between spling and fall crops vs. summer crops. Plan, experiment, correct, and modify as time and conditions dictate. Good luck, and good growing folks.
ОтветитьBrother I just bought a 3.5 acre property, south-facing in southeastern tennessee (Monroe County) and I have been findin trash like no other. Half dozen satellite dishes, cans aplenty, not to mention a marathon worth of coaxial cable throughout the house. Me and my family moved from NY this past weekend and are loving it already. Planning on building my chicken chop very soon and get a dozen or so laying hens in March. We also have about 2 acres of great pasture with hay growing. Once we get comfortable we will scale the chickens up and then get some pigs and a miniature jersey dairy cow and of course plenty of permaculture. Former USMC and I needed a more peaceful lifestyle and away from the hustle bustle and bullsh*t in the communist utopia of suburban New York. I am so happy because I purchased my NY home pre-Covid and made $150k in profit and was able to buy this home cash and now I have no mortgage at 40 y.o., my two vehicles are paid off and I have no credit card debt. I work in healthcare and I am really looking forward to life now when previously I was dreading every day. Thanks to you and a couple other channels I saw that it can be done and for me it needed to be done. Keep inspiring because I know you are changing lives by showing us simpletons the way. Who knows I may even reach out and have you help me with the design of this place. Take care and God bless.
ОтветитьMy favorite permaculture recommendation is " It depends..."
ОтветитьSome great info on my placement of a runoff tanks and planning.. thank you Billy and the rest of family at the Perma Pastor Farms
ОтветитьSo cool to see this video today as I just started a book about appreciating stillness. It’s funny how you “feel” like you’re wasting time when you’re enjoying your land. But that’s the most valuable thing we can do with it.
Ответитьi think you need to have roster soup...
