The Seiko Enthusiasts Have Wanted For Years - Alpinist GMT Review

Just a small correction, determining direction in the Southern Hemisphere with the sun and the compass bezel is actually a little bit different than we show in the video. Sorry about that!

Tried this on today. I still prefer my classic green alpinist. I thought I would love the GMT but meh, didn’t do anything for me..

I really think seiko should differentiate their sub branding using the crown rather than having Pressage or Pro-spec on their dials. And I really hope seiko is working on having a third selector on the one crown to operate the compass bezel that would be sweet.

I find the compass feature is actually quite useful for more than just a compass, for example you can set the north mark at the minute hand and use it to see the time elapsed

With a GMT watch it's very easy to determine North. When you point the GMT hand (set to local time) at the sun, the 12 o'clock marker of the watch face points north (in northern hemispheres)

Unfortunately I can't stand thick watches...wish that it still would be 12.5 mm like the old SARB017.

What is up with Seiko and there straps and bracelets?! Fantastic timepieces. Mediocre straps at best. I just don’t understand it 🫣

Love my ‘ghost alpinist’ but has too much of a….dressy vibe, this GMT version screams versatility…..on my ‘want’ list!!!!

Is there STILL an alignment feature/failure with Alpinists ?

It is absurd to suggest anyone has been waiting for this. The Alpinist was a field watch and these new complications are anathema to the concept and a solution to a problem that never existed. The blame can be borne mainly in Seiko's marketing department and others that promote this ludicrous concept. It is quite sad how these watch reviews have a sameness reflecting a tired and and formulaic approach to the wasteful accumulation of consumer products in a forlorn attempt to enhance the life experience of individuals who should know better and will never realise lasting satisfaction.

Just get a Hamilton kahki field and cut the crap

I picked up a blue one and it’s a great watch but the band is highly annoying. Ordered a replacement from zulu diver and it’s now fantastic.

39.5 is just a tad small. The lowest I'll go is about 41mm.

before i even watch this video, let me guess at the start - this watch does not have a true GMT movement, this is merely a "dual time zone" watch, not a GMT watch. i would be shocked if you can get a true GMT movement at this price level.

This is a beauty but a 1.1k id think one would rather just double down and get a GS or a Tag Heuer, or maybe get a lesser known brand at that price point like Baltic, for example.

I love the alpinist but too small for me.

I want to like Seiko, but something about the lack of “whitespace” on the divers and field watches keeps me away. Come on Seiko, make more clean and simple dials, with top notch finish and movement..I know you can do it.

Seiko movements are cheap and don’t last very long. I’ve owned enough of them.

I bought the Sarb33,35 and 17 from new together for around 1000 dollars. Needless to say I won't buy this hodgepodge of styles.

Thanks for the very thorough review. Lack of a signed crown and bracelet option are deal killers for me I am afraid.

Apples to oranges I realize: Same disappointment every time with “upgrading the brand” is the strap/bracelet. Longines failed with the Zulu timer, this one fails with the crap strap. It’s unacceptable at $1k plus to deliver a poor quality strap option

This is a gorgeous watch from the front - but once you turn it on the side it just looks too thick for me. It's gorgeous though in every other way! Love the white dial limited edition too.

Another seiko that’s way too thick and bulky

Seiko going up-market made it loose my appeal to the brand. I got the SKX007 in 2016 for ~200 USD at that time. I still think that was THE bang for the buck pick, and for an iconic piece as well. Design + value wise, I can't think of anything that comes close to that in their current catalogue.

Not a true GMT unfortunately

These are nice but I can't say I like the date or the thickness. I have the original alpanist on a metal strap and I love that watch, but I just can't justify getting a GMT that is slightly thicker.

Bezel is ugly, not a true GMT, price is ridiculous for a 6R movement. I’m sure it will sell well because people like over paying for watches in general.

Can’t not like these Alps. Strap monsters. Totally don’t get compass feature, though. Also, SRPK’s kick a$$.

Office spec and price makes this watch short with its delivery. I don’t think the power reserve is worth but if they made it a traveller gmt would’ve not only justify the price but could’ve got away with an extra €250+ on the current msrp.

Do not buy any 6R35 or 6RXX , it’s a cheap made movement intended to increase power reserve, I own two watches with this movement and I regret it over similar Swiss made pieces (price wise) that I own as well

O.K. For $230.oo i bought A Seestern Rolex Explorer 2 1655 Homage fitted with a Seiko NH 34 "Caller" GMT movement. This is ostensibly The SAME movement as the "Alpinist" GMT, but with a 50hr power reserve. From day.1 out-of-th'-box when i wear it for 10hrs a day & leave it on the NightStand in ALL positions, it gains 2" a day! I have had it for 6 months + & it is still performing the same. I know it is a cheap Chinese Homage, but i love it to bits & i own 2 Omega Speedmasters, a Rolex Explorer 14270 & i do NOT give a shit about what other people think of the watches i wear, Dig? I am 70 yrs old & i know My Horological Onions. Also, i was one of Th' 1st Kiddies-On-Th'-Block to get a SARB017 & i'm sticking with it. This GMT "Alpinist" is nothing more than A Ca$h-Grab Show Pony!

I didn't like it. Seiko movements in this price range should have better precision. Simplest ETA movements even Miyota of my Tsuyosa perform better. I have classical green Alpinist, like the appearance but quality sucks. Bezel moves vertically while turning. After Alpinist which should have much higher quality for that price, i decided to never buy a Seiko again.

They still can’t line up the compass. Bothers every time I use mine 😂

Is the crystal domed so this accounts for some of the thickness of the watch?
