Great video, and thanks for your courses. Really helped give me the tools to start improving on my own and you broke things down well

Does your patreon work with BRAND NEW painters? As in explaining all the basics in a structured way?

Thanks -- apparently I have not been paying attention to saturation, and this is clear looking back at my recent works. I like working dark to light, "turning on the lights" as you say, at the end. Now I am excited to dial in saturation because I think it will make a huge difference.

Not understanding value kept me from painting anything even acceptably, let alone well. Mind you, painting was a kind of 'foil' activity for me through my working years, so it was more just jabbing a brush at a canvas hoping for some serendipitous result. Now, in these elder years, the time to study the art and to be more patient with the process are what was not possible before. Thank you for stressing these important concepts repeatedly - it takes a lot of reps to get through this skull.

It'd be a cool video/stream (series?) to drink and paint a cocktail

I wish you would do some videos on computer equipment and software. I see you using a tablet, laptop and monitor together. You are a whiz at the software programs you use. I may not need to use everything you do, but would like to be able to put my reference photos on a large monitor both vertically and horizontally, but don’t know how. I’m currently printing out my reference photos.

Thinking of using a neutral grey as my starting point for mixing paint, especially on the first block in.

I have a question regarding repainting over a store bought oil painting. I dont know if it's varnished. What are the steps I need to take before repainting it with oil paint? It has some texture too.

Finally someone thoughtful and reflective enough to articulate the implicit knowledge underpinning basic painting techniques. Surely the master painters of the bygone times knew these things already and yet our art education fails to directly communicate most of this knowledge. My art classes instead were focused on using the work of others as "inspiration" rather than references for developing technique. Your insights give painting a technical dimension that moves it beyond just expression of creative ideas. It makes it into a skill that we can master through basic exercises.

I love your videos a lot. That bottle looks like a bald guy wearing a safety jacket and some sort of ear piece viewed from the back...😊
