I call this concept a lateral shift. The same thing applies in a number of areas. In striking you can turn you side to the opponent and move forward and backwards yourself in natural alignment to move laterally across them. I'm doing the same thing in swimming instead of doing the 'splits' for propulsion. Probably why marathoners don't side shuffle for all of those miles.
