It looks like it was rotting in the largest part of the trunk you can see the discoloration in the inner wood when the guys are posing for their picture at the end. The components of the upper parts still looked pretty good. As you say, too bad. What a tree!

@tl124 that discolouration is normal, previous massive limb failure may of happened recently causing a knee jerk reaction and the tree was removed. Limb failure on veteran cedars is fairly common I,ve worked on many equal and greater in far worse condition, a shame really, feels like they did cause they could not because they should have.

@DOORS20 looked like a special occasion and good job to learn crane rigging big bits, the second climber was probably an experienced climber overseeing and offering advice, take downs this size are pretty rare in Europe,.

at like the7:10 mark it looks like there was a fracture strait across? I have only cut a handfull of trees using a crane and i tell you it is so sweet.

Fleischgewehr K You missed the point. If you could read French, you would know that this is a training as part of a forestry school. These guys are basically learning to fell a tree. Not doing it yet as professionnals in a hurry and at minimum cost... no need to do some French-bashing. Damn...

Je crois que le problème numéro un c'est d'avoir construit à proximité ou de l'avoir planté proche d'habitations
J'ai entendu parler de charpentières de cèdres qui avaient cédées lors de sorties grimpe.
Comme quoi, il ne faut pas se fier uniquement aux apparences, mais une bonne connaissance des essences est indispensable

Dommage

As a climber myself, the amount of jumping and swinging of some of the pieces being picked by the crane is a little disconcerting...that dynamic loading puts a lot more strain on the crane. The use of chains is also interesting...in the U.S. I've only ever seen cable or soft slings used.

Ah ça pour abattre des œuvres d'art comme cet arbre ont sais faire. Il n'y aucune gloire a faire ca.

Parfois, c'est quasiment impossible de procéder à des démontages sans avoir recoure à l'assistance d'un service d'un camion-grue. Bien jouer !
