Woodturning an End Grain Apple Bowl

Very nice piece of apple wood. You made a beautiful looking bowl out of it. I was lucky enough to buy a few ( smaller pieces) from a guy and just last week turned my third ever box out of the one piece. I was so amazed at the beautiful colour and grain that appeared as I turned it. I wish I had a big piece like this one. Anyway yet another very educational and fun turning to watch. Thanks .

Beautiful piece, Gary. I love the color. Guess what, I have an apple tree about that size in my back yard that has never produced any good apples. I intended to take it down. Now you've given me the incentive to hurry up.

Lovely bowl Gary, the contrasting colours really add that “something extra” to the piece & the remains of the branch makes for an interesting talking point. Phil’s idea for removing the nub is something I’ve yet to try out on the right piece.

Gorgeous bowl, Gary...the grain is fabulous!

Well done leaving a bit of natural at the top. I have a whole pallet of apple wood waiting for my attention. Some of it has beautiful little burls from years of pruning off suckers. Looking forward to working it this upcoming dark and wet season. Hope mine turn out as nice as yours did.

Looks really nice!!  Great contrast in sapwood and heart. Apple is a lovely looking wood for sure.  I've heard it can distort and crack, what's your experience with turning it green Gary? Let us know if this bowl changes shape dramatically in the drying process.

You certainly got a beautiful bowl out of that piece of Apple, Gary. I'm just editing the video of an Apple crotch that I turned. I have never turned Apple before so I don't know if it was unusual but, man, was that wood hard. I had to sharpen my tools quite often! Enjoyed the video, Gary.

The heartwood, sapwood and bark in this piece just work in harmony, along with your spectacular finish, to make this a very special bowl. The branch going from the inside, through the rim is just too cool. Great job, Gary! Good job removing that tenon, too! I love to see that and you had it under control all the way to the cutoff point. Fun to watch video, keep'em coming!
