The Federation on the wrong side; as usual.

This was one of my favorite episodes of DS9. Sisko's intelligence is on point, Garak nearly immediately gets the memo.... God such a good episode.

This was a smart ass stunt on the part of Sisko. I would think that the Klingon sense of honor would be greatly antagonized by this little maneuver. The Klingons might be even more angered by this move than if the Federation had simply told Cardassia directly.

Their's no way a seasoned intelligence official wouldn't believe they weren't being fed disinformation here.

I love how everyone immediately understood what Sisko meant by "a third option"... and didn't like it.

Anyone else get the impression that while "The Way of the Warrior" was to introduce Worf as a series regular on DS9...

...it really looks more like a episode written to justify proposing that Andrew Robinson as Garak should have been a series regular.

The Klingon fleet will reach Cardassian space within the hour, I suggest you prepare for them

I realized something, Sisko wants Garek to warn Dukat whenever he wanted him to go to the wardroom, and he wanted Garek to eavesdrop the meeting so he can warn Dukat and see what he can do.

Dukat really had to get that "hate for Garak" boner known didnt he? Even when everything is burning around him, im sure he would still say "screw you Garak you make womens clothes!"

Five Federation officers, a Federation NCO, a Bajoran Officer and a Changeling calmly discuss ignoring direct orders from the Federation because they think they know better.
They betrayed their oaths and the treaty with the Klingon Empire with the help of a Cardassian spy.
Clearly, the entire command structure of DS9 should have been replaced and sent to a penal colony.

The dynamics between Sisko and Garak, or Garak and anybody for that matter, was always a highlight of the show.

Shows in general need these grey characters. I'm quite tired of the same old good guys vs. bad guys crap. It's greyness and nuance that make shows great and much more than just a momentary entertainment.

I also like how Garak does not tip off Dukat that "his sources" were Sisko and the Federation. The man knows how to conduct espionage ... a consummate professional who doesn't say more than he needs, but says all that's needed.

AR-15 is a near perfect platform for coyote or hog hunting, won't "mutilate" a deer at all but is maybe less than ideal, though an AR-15 platform doesn't need to a .223 either... Why bring on "experts" that don't actually know anything on what they speak of???

The best thing about this show is how none of the races or groups are portrayed as evil or good, only shades of grey. Even the Federation. It was refreshing and a very adult approach to take.

How much did this warning help Cardassia? 1 hour to get ready for a massive attack isn't very long.

Not only is the writing brilliant and concise yet full of information, the lines play to the strengths of each character: O'brien dissecting the situation like an engineer, Kira seeing it through the lens of a guerilla fighter, Odo and Worf bringing to play their insights into the own people, Dax focusing on the "long view" strategic stakes, Bashir concerned about saving lives in pushing to warn the Cardassians. And all at the same time, the scene still manages to showcase an eternal truth of human affairs: brinksmanship and the tortures of deciding if military action--war, now, is better to avoid a greater conflict later, or whether it is best to insist on a diplomatic solution to the gathering clouds. From Thucydides and the Peloponnesian War, to Caesar's preemptive strike on Gaul, to appeasement in the 1930s, the non-intervention in China pre-1948, to the invasion of Iraq... to the current predicament. And never will it be known before the day after whether one or the other is the correct strategy for the conflict at hand.
