If politics affects, or even breaks friendships, it wasn't a friendship to begin with. Doesn't matter which side you are on. You should breathe easy that that bond is over, cherish the good times from it. People have broken up relationships and friendships for much sillier reasons. The emotions involved in politics is genuinely strong. But honestly, if political differences disturb any bond, then chances are that difference of opinions in other aspects of life are impacting it too. Chances are, that one or both sides, are trying too hard to change the opinion of the other about something, and that's not friendship for many. It may be the nature of some to do so, overselling their point - it can be about anything. They may find better compatibility with people of similar nature. Again, doesn't matter which side - someone whose nature isn't to take sides may not hang around long. I have seen people use the same tactics, tone etc, to sell their ideas about not just politics, but about anything under the sun! I won't say politics has any fault. In fact, it might be the last straw on the camel's back - a bond that was waiting to be broken, which broke, because one or both sides thought that something as impersonal as politics could matter in personal equations.

Nice observations. The debate quality being low and entire media being pro Govt is a issue where liberals are forced fearing their existance to be get Govt targetting and hypocritical. A issue is also a failure in Indian education system where no one is taught to be critical, rational and free to have own views. Students are treated as sheeps so also you get a socitey of sheeps. Also since people are having less job options and have to fight to make a life, they have less time/chance to fight the box and think freely - rather they try to play along their social previledges and passive-adhere to groups that by default take them in for their birth previledges.
