i played every level with just the super mushroom bagde and rhai level was so frustrating without any leeway
i'm glad to say i have 100% every standard level i still have the final bagde level i can't beat because i just don't undestand how to use 1 badge like they intend for clearing the section

So funny story, when I was playing the demo for this game, I got curious about a rumor going around during launch about the game giving you immense pity when you Game Over, and I did that while playing the demo. I was disappointed to just receive a scolding from Prince Florian and my usual life amount.

The first two Paper Mario games are defined by streamlined design. It's not just the choice to use small numbers, or only build three stats. It's the way that the game gives you meaningful choices by making each increment or upgrade comparatively powerful, but FORCES the player to choose.
That is why Paper Mario diehards think the badge system is so powerful, and sometimes don't even regard it as something similar to other ability equip systems. Other games throw new gear at you constantly, and rarely have limitations. You will even get repeats of abilities on stronger pieces of armor, or have them stack multiple previous abilities on a new single piece of equipment. Not counting the ability to intentionally buy duplicates for abilities that stack, badges permanent and unique options afforded to the player.

Even then, there were games before and after that treat combat abilities and passives like a equipables, and have equipment drain so they can't all be equipped at once. In fact I think a better comparison than materia would be KH's ability system. It does the same thing, but for a realtime combat system, and goes as far as to allow the player to dramatically change the base combo and finishers. Tho I still think there's something to be said about Paper Mario's limitations.

If Emile is looking to fill holes in RPG repertoire I highly recommend Ys and Trails. Especially now with the first Trails game getting a remake (Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter) which is releasing in Fall of 2025. I think he'd love them.

to be pedantic, the badge system is actually fairly different from the materia and Magicite system since those focused on equipping the items to weapons or characters in order to master them and gain their abilities over time, can be equipped to anyone and are somewhat self-contained, yes their are one's that can interact with their fellow materia or magicite but overall each one is mostly an equipable ability. where as badges are equipables that are tied to player progression choice and are heavily built around soft and hard synergies, such as danger strats, power bounce builds etc, they are also static, the badge you have at the start will be the same at the end.
TLDR materia/magicite is more general buffs that give character's new abilities overtime while badges are more specific and are about customizing one's specific loadout to one's liking through synergies.

Fun fact about the ozone layer! The reason you don't hear about it anymore is because all the fuss pressured world governments to regulate CFC's, an old component for aerosols that was the prime culprit damaging the ozone layer. With production of those banned, the ozone layer is actually on the mend. Turns out public pressure and regulation do have an impact even if "ozone layer fine now, good job everyone" makes for a poor headline

Bounce, Bounce, Bounce was not too bad compared to Climb to the Beat, at least in single player. If I ever get my hands on whoever made the latter one...
