Weapons development tests. These were in the sub-50KT range, with development in levitated 'pits' to increase production using orally (uranium highly enriched U-235 alloy at 92%)

First testing of ‘boosted’ cores with liquid D/T to provide fast-fusion neutrons, producing additional fission generations and therefore more yield. This ultimately led to the first stage design of the Teller/Ulam “Super” using 2nd, 3rd stage “layer cake” designs for true fusion fuel thermonuclear devices. FUN FACT: Teller, Ulam didn’t actually design the actual weapon/device. They provided the theoretical physics behind it.
