For decades, the United States has been a leader in satellite navigation technology. The U.S. Global Positioning System, or GPS as most of us know it, was originally designed as a military tool, but has also become indispensable in the lives of civilians, with over 6 billion users around the world. But the U.S. is not the only country with its own global navigation satellite system. Russia has GLONASS and the European Union has Galileo. In 2020, China launched the last satellite needed to complete its own global system called Beidou, which translates to “Big Dipper” in English. Since then, the influence of Beidou has grown, with an estimated 1.1 billion people now using the system. Experts say Beidou underpins not only China’s military ambitions, but is also spurring economic growth in the country and increasing its diplomatic leverage.

Wonder why people are not inclined to cooperation than create antagonism. US was not justified to interfer in Chinese cooperation. When some claim on subsidisation a compromized society think of risk. Actually China is far ahead to western technology achievements.

GPS giving location information is for consumer use. China doing the same is for tracking people.

Funny how hypocritic the video is. Till now US had power to cut china off its network and everything was fine. Now China has made itself independent of US, suddenly the US is crying about it. It seems like the video is not about China having its own GPS, its more about how US lost its power over China because of it.

If you think about it, US is just forcing its enemies to beat them in their own game. US bans Huawei and puts restrictions, SMIC comes up with 7nm tech in a year. If you think about the implications, the TSMC is the biggest loser as they now got a competition. Not just that China will innovate everything that they cannot get. So the companies that are already established will get competition from China.

It happened when China was refused access to ISS.
US seizing Russian Reserves have pushed other countries to switch to their local currencies for trade, moving away from US.

US needs to learn that deterrence works when it is not used. The moment it is used, it must work or else it will backfire.

Is it hard to admit that beidou is better? Being able to send text messages via beidou is critical in an emergency situation, it could be live or death!

The comments from Mikie Sherrill shows US hypocrisy. Everyone knows that the US eavesdropping everybody in the world, particularly important people. The US eavesdrops even close ally leaders, such as Angela Merkel. With the increase use of China technology (Huawei, Beidou), the chance for US to eavedrop reduced significantly. That is the main reason why the US disallow its satellite countries to use China products.

With GPS-3, I think that in about 10 years, US GPS could be quite formidable, unless China upgrades its system in the next 10 years, for 6G, quantum computing and so on. Oh, well, I wouldn’t worry. It will be alright!

China soon will be offering its Beidou in 130 BRI countries, getting the leg up globally on the US’s GPS by offering link-up to cell phones.

It is going to be a formidable competitor in Russia, much of Asia, in Africa, South America and so on.

I am not as much worried about Beidou being used as a method of surveillance as much as I worry about the Americans spying on all of the cloud servers and fibre optic lines of the major tech companies (pls refer to Edward Snowden’s findings). Now THAT should be stopped.

Why does stream media, always put "threat" in their title to make China bad??? It's really some propaganda. I mean we are talking about a constellation of satellite that will be added into the already full earth orbit where thousands and thousand of satellites from many countries are already circulating. China will not take out GPS system from America, they are creating their own system so that US can't cut navigation to their infrastructure or vehicule.. just like Russia did with GLONASS or Europe has done with GALILEO.. so is GALILEO is a threat??? come on CNBC stop puting some propaganda for every subject that is linked to China. There is no threat, people will be able to chose the best system for their positioning system. GPS is oudated, and Beidou or Galileo are much sharper already.

US has militarized the use of GPS and forced anyone to obey US order with a threat of shutting down the use of GPS. It has happened many times and , at least once, US has shut down GPS when Chinses ships were left wondering in the ocean for about ONE MONTH. China had asked to join with US developing advancement of GPS but was emphatically rejected by US. Out of necessity and pride they developed their own BEIDO System. Had US not using GPS as a weapon, China would NOT develop their own system

Don’t know why feel threatened by China’s gps project. Should be worried about those chinese owning 1/3 of US debt , while China created a strong link between commodities suppliers without using dollars. In other words on the worst case scenario before any conflict China flush down the toilet the US and Europe economy by selling its trillions and trillions of dollars stacked. Even Tuvalu currency would wort more than 1 dollar. Now how smart are them? And Ukraine conflict the more it prolongs the better for them ( China ) as US increase the abysmal debt more and more.
