according to the 1978 ranger handbook the definition of a ranger is one who is serving in a ranger unit, served in 2/75th, grad rgr school class 4-80, was ri in dahlonega

To put it plainly. Ranger School is harder than RASP. You will find many more Soldiers that have passed RASP but failed Ranger School than the other way around. Both are a huge suckfest. However, in Ranger School, you go through sleep and food deprivation ay a much higher level. Also, Ranger School is more knowledge and leadership based.

One thing I never hear discussed is that there is a popularity voter those who complete RASP. I have a young friend that made it thru RASP twice and got black balled both times. The candidates in each class vote on the top five that they would like to serve with and the top five they wouldn't want to serve with.Sergeant Major said he's going to the Regiment, he's got grit. He bombed out on night navigation in Ranger School. Went back to 82nd Airborne to complete his enlistment.

I have a question regarding Ranger qualification. I was in the fortunate few not the Army, but I did go thru the Army Jump school in 1980, and since the Corps didn’t really have dedicated airborne units, I would jump with the Army from time to time in order to keep my status current. Back then I had soldiers tell me that it was possible to attend the required courses individually to qualify for a Ranger tab, and that it was common for soldiers to be “tabbed” before they even completed the training. I don’t know if they were pulling my leg or not, but in the Corps, I was infantry and jump qualified, but even if I completed the remaining courses, I would have had to attend the recon course to join it. Hopefully someone can clear this up for me.

So, I guess the obvious question here is, what does "ranger qualified" mean.?

That's easy to answer. I was a tabbed Ranger from 3/75 from 92-96. Ranger School is just a school. Ranger bn is a way of life. You also train for a lot of special operations missions that they don't teach at the school. Why do you think they are the only ones Delta uses for blocking positions? No one is better at that.

Simple one is a regular Army school and one is a way of life… if you don’t know which is which you have never been part of the 75th…

Most of the time Rgr Bn will send you to Rgr School. That said, when I went through it was RIP. I am old school. I watched a lot of guys drop out and go to the 82 instead of Rgr Bn

Question can a Soldier who has successfully completed RASP and served in a Ranger Battalion ( Lived the life) but has not completed Ranger school compete in US Army's Best Ranger competition?

There are exchanges which happen at Ranger school. Not only do people from other branches of the US military attend Ranger school, but other countries send people too. There have been Canadians and British soldiers there.

Okay so if I go to the recruiter do I tell them I want to try out for rasp instead of rangers??

Ramnger School has NOTHIING to do with calling yourself a Ranger..
It is a Small Unit Leadership School, nothing more..
Anyone can go and being in Reg has nothing to do with it. You can EVEN BE A LEG and go to Ranger school.

Sua sponte. Id rather be in regiment & no tab than a tab and be in some whack unit.

Ranger school, if not full Ranger experirnce, may be handy for assignments in other units. Especiall for specialized officers or high rank enlisted. May have occasional associated assignments working with rangers or special forces. Happens at Bragg frequently.

So RIP (75 Ranger B) is RASP but a little harder and with more possibilities of being deployed.
