Sennheiser's MKE 400 On-Camera Microphone has GREAT SOUND in a SMALL PACKAGE! Is it the New Champ?

Imo, the MKE 400 can match the sound of the others with a bit of eq.

I think that for most people, they don’t want to EQ, and why should they? Especially with all the other options available.

I think that is why the RODE is a popular choice especially that NTG, since controlling the eq is one less thing to worry about.

I really couldn't tell the difference. Between the 3 I wanna get me the mke 400 but deity is cheaper and really can't hear the difference between the 2

Great video. I have the MKE with a Sony A7IV and I get so much self noise with this mic. I have the Mike set in the loud setting and my camera set to 8. Any help to set this up correctly would be very appreciated. Thanks

One reason NOT to get the Rode mics is their stupid advertising seemingly on every product they make. They should pay me for that.

Dunna, I am looking for a mic/audio recorder duo that can do everything. I use a Sony A7IV, and I am looking to do several types of video: studio/podcast/streaming, YT content including different sounds that water makes and pens make (I do reviews of fountain pens and tea), vocals (singing), and run-and-gun video both indoors and out. I prefer to spend on quality, and only have to spend once. I did order a Zoom H6 and Shure SM7B, but I am wondering if I did the right thing... especially since the SM7B is more of a studio-only, stationary microphone. Do you have any recommendations for me? Should I keep the Zoom H6 or should I look into the RodeCasterPro instead? Should I keep the Shure and get a different microphone for the camera?

I'm always surprised by how good the Videomicro sounds for what it is. Deity sounds much thinner to me. NTG sounds balanced. MKE400 sounds slightly better than the Videomicro to me but not as good as the NTG.

Not only is the cold shoe mount hard to tighten it’s cheap plastic and is too thin to grip onto the cold shoe no matter how hard you tighten it down. I ended up screwing on a small rig cold shoe mount which raised the profile (unfortunately) but was metal and resulted in a way sturdier setup.

tldr cold shoe mount on the mke400 is 🐕 💩 which is a shame because it sounds pretty good otherwise.

Mke 400 beats them all. Rode is not better sounding.

I have a video NTG and I would still want to get this due to the size and the build. The issue I have with Rose mic is the shock mount that is flimsy and it breaks if it’s not placed right in the bag. This one would solve that issue and it’s more compact as well.

Also, I can always get rechargeable AAA batteries to overcome the issue of rechargability.

Hi dunna can I use Third party TRS - TRS cable for mic input? my TRS cable that come with the mic already lost.

Gotta agree with you on the sound. The best sounding one is the NTG by a decent margin. The MKE400 sounds boxy. Like its missing a lot of Hz as if its really limited. Probably the built in noise filter and maybe its programmed that way to avoid problems in the cage with high end or something. It sounds like its all upper mids. Kinda artificial. Thanks for the review. I guess I'll get a second NTG for the second camera.

I’m looking for a microphone that has that 3.5mm jack for the wireless go, but I’m not sure what I should look at for environments that extremely loud. Ie concerts next to speakers. Ty for the video!

Just so everyone is aware energizer does make AAA rechargeable batterys just like AA you can get them at Lowes or home depot hardware stores that you can use with this Mic

Wonderful video! How does the MKE400 fare in rejecting off-axis, extraneous sound in an exterior environment? And how does it compare in that respect to the RØDE Videomic NTG? Also, which one has a further “reach?”

Funny story. I'm looking into replacing my current Røde mic and was looking at the MKE400 .. then I thought, "I wonder if Dunna's tried this?" and here we are. Going to check for a MKE400 vs MKE200 review and see what fits for out on the town ...

I have both the MKE 400 and the little, battery-less MKE 200. Great on camera mics. Both now come with the TRRS cable for mobile and the TRS cable for cameras. Size plus decent sound make them my go to mics. Above that, I'm apt to go external recorder and XLR mics, with a hand off to the camera from the recorder.

If I currently have the Deity D3 (standard version, not pro), and am looking to do more interview and instructional course work, would this be worth the upgrade do you think? Right now it seems like the dB adjustments on-mic would make it worth it, plus I like that it has more bass than the Deity. But I'm not sure if maybe there's more I can squeeze out of what I currently have. Thoughts?

I'm considering the MKE 400 and the Rode VideoMic Pro + for filming wildlife on a camcorder. Much prefer the compactness of the MKE 400, but would I be losing any sensitivity/reach by not using the Pro +? Replaceable battery option is a must. No built-in rechargeable non-sense.

I'm debating between this or the Deity D3. If it was just about getting an on-camera mic, it'd be a no-brainer to pick the MKE 400. But for the same price, I can get the D3, a 2nd lav mic for my wireless setup, and a dead cat. So do I go for great function and ergonomics in one mic or covering as much ground as I can?

Would you recommend recording on +20 on the mic and -12 on my pansonic g9 or should I just do +0 and -12 on my panasonic?

MKE 400 vs MKE 600? Which one better for run and gun documentary?

Being someone who backpacks to my filming locations this may be the new mic for me. Like many I've had and have my share of mics. The MKE 440 (Wide/bulky), Deity Pro 3 (Huge. Too long for wide shots), and an old Rode Pro (wire broke/melted). The 440 has been dropped hard and had the windscreen melted but it still works. I liked the lows on the Rode slightly better but portability wise it's not so great. Fragile too. Looks like I'll be trying the MKE 400. I run two cameras both with mics and a Zoom set far enough away for continuous backup audio. All outdoors nature stuff. Good audio is so important. People comment about the clean audio on my lava videos often.
