Had a Romanian neighbour a few years back who told me he and lot of people he knows actually miss those days, everything was simpler, he didn't like some of the ways but he said people had homes and jobs, streets were safer, etc. He left Romania 5 years later because things got really tough, he was a nice man, hope he's well.

This is my theory as a romanian: Ceausescu was paranoid that the Russians are coming to kill him.. That's why he keeps saying that we "need to demonstrate our strenght and unity...blah blah..Ceausescu was the pro us comunist (there are lots of video prof of him together with the americans, but he was almost never in the URSS..The russians got him in the end...
