@airsoftguy85rocks If the handle is the stacked leather washer type, or one piece, I can't tell. But it is equal to the Cases' I've seen, only black. If you are after the best for your dollar and don't mind price...Case or Kabar. I got this one in a trade otherwise I'd have got a Case. But for the money the Ontario is a Great knife also and does everything I want it to. I use this knife in the woods and it performs excellent. CASE & Kabar looks better and cost a little more.

@airsoftguy85rocks Good info...Thanks for posting it. The black coating on my Ontario (whatever it is) is still good and I have used it a fair bit. I have heard that older Kabars are better.

@airsoftguy85rocks Having owned the Case version,Ontario version and Kabar version I like this one the best,it's preformance is on par if not better than the Kabar version, honestly the Case XX version is EXACTLY the same knife but with a brown handle

I heard the Ontario is the one that USMC enlisted actually receive instead of the Ka-Bar.

@krazy4knives I got mine in a trade, but I would check eBay or their website for the closest dealer to you.

@99percentsharp They are both great lives. The Kabar would probably be considered superior by most though.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like the new Kabar ones might have a flaw in the steel.

Why do you have the Italian Flag as a background for the knife?

It's not the Italian flag. It is a Hudson's Bay Co. Point blanket.

Oh. Nice Knife by the way. Ontario is a good and only alternative to Ka-Bar. I bought a Navy Mark 2, identical to your Ontario, from the PX while a soldier based in Korea back in 1998 and it was made by Camillus. I didn't think much of it until the United Steel Workers forced the company to shut down. Now my Camillus "Ka-Bar" is a collectors item :) .

Amazingly, one of the few vids out on this knife. I recently bought the 498 as a work/beater in place of my sentimentalized Ka-Bar, which I have had since 98. I like the Ontario better. It has a substantially thicker tang/blade interface over the Ka- Bar. Ontario's 1095 steel takes an edge very easily and holds it. A steel honing rod works nicely on the 498. I'm sure it is the same 1095 in their famed Rat series. Ka-bar's 1095 cro van is good, but in my experience, is difficult to sharpen.

I believe the 498 is built stronger than the Ka-ba because of the larger tang. It is also lighter. Very sturdy knife. Fast in the hand. I stripped the paint off the handle. It took me 3 to 4 applications to remove it. The stacked leather underneath is very rough. I didn't smooth it yet, giving the rougher texture a try. I just oiled it up good with olive and Neatsfoot oil, then Sno Sealed it. The grip is indeed much more comfortable than the painted, and very secure, while remaining water proof.

Great knife. I carried one in the army for years and bought it because it cost less than a KA-BAR. Ended up trading it away to one of our "allies". Gotta get another one.
