What Was Life Really Like For A Medieval Peasant?

Watch the full episode of 'Going Medieval: Those Who Work' on History Hit TV: https://access.historyhit.com/going-medieval/videos/those-who-work

In the Medieval period, peasants made up roughly 80% of the European population. But what was life really like for a peasant during the Middle Ages? Under the feudal system, was it all backbreaking toil on the land, working for a local lord? What did it actually mean to be a peasant? And how did it differ from being a serf?

In the first episode of Going Medieval, Dr Eleanor Janega visits Denny Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery in Cambridge to explore the lives of those who devoted their lives to working the land.

I love the way Dr. Janega breaks down the aspects of common people's lives (food, clothing, work, tech, etc.). This is one of the best series I have found on life in the Middle Ages. I hope she will continue to produce these shows.

Things have not changed. Your place in society still dictates everything- what you eat, where you can go, or how educated you can be (tuition, student loans), or how long you will live (healtcare). Most people can afford only the basic costs of life.

Dr Janega's documentaries are very information rich. Some other medieval documentaries involve lots of walking around, doing some medieval activity, showing things, which is very limited in scope and doesn't give the full picture.

Wow, colourful medieval pictures, as if there would be colours in that period.
In most films and German documentations about that time, there is a grey filter and dirt all over.

Very good!

I really don’t like stitching through double sided tape. It makes the needle almost greasy and strips off any beeswax that was making it easy to handle the needle. Don’t underestimate white glue, I use fiebings leather cement. Quick drying and easy to use. I decant it into a plastic bottle with a fine nozzle to get good accuracy. In my opinion it makes hand sewing much easier.

I really do think this is how farming should go back to, it’s much more economical and much better for the environment. We won’t have to put so many (if any) harmful chemicals back into spent soil. I know this is on the tiny scale, I make sure I plant my own “crops” on rotation. I make sure bits in the garden are kept barren to regain the nutrients and I will add organic matter (and feed) back into that.

I hope that in the future - when I can afford my own place - I will have my own garden/allotment and I will grow my own to the time of year. Yes I’ll buy produce that isn’t in time within the UK… I’ll give it a bloody good go though!

the rights of serfs were different in different areas. In some places serfs owned nothing but their pants and shirt and no rights to even chose their spouse. in other places a serf was able to become even rich. very fifferent rules.

Interesting. It is strange to understand why people still have Royalty. The Churches have so much of the money. The worship and admiration of today's society worship people who display great wealth. Why wars are fought and why are we still in this miserable shape. What has broken the back of the basic educational system?
Mankind seems to stay on the dwindling spiral. 🌀 Are we doomed are we at the end of this spiral?

It must be pointed out that Constantine IX's position was weaker than other Emperors because he was emperor only by right of marriage to his wife, Empress Zoe, who was, along with her sisters Theodora, co-heiresses of the Empire, as the daughters of Constantine VIII and therefore he was joint ruler with them.
Also the video downplays the role that Constantine played in causing the rebellions. He cut funding for the military to fund the luxurious lifestyles of himself, his wife, and his mistresses. His Mistress Maria had a brother who seduced the wife of General George Maniacus. General George was the most brilliant Roman general of his age, and his mistreatment by yhe Imperial court caused his rebellion in 1043. Another rebellion was rebellion was started by Constantine' nephew, Leo, in part inspired by Constantine's persecution of the Armenian Church.

In 2023 in the uSA and UK, it is still the case that the social position one is born into, in nearly every case, decides where you live, your education level, what you eat, what you believe, what work you do (or) do not do and how long you live.

Little changes in the human existence.

Serf's freedom was limited. However, it was also Medieval "social security." Serfs could NOT be evicted... even if there was a famine or the husband died and children were too young to work.
