There will be one telltale sign of human activity that will exist even a billion years from now. Plastic. It doesn't degrade, pieces get smaller and smaller even microscopic but that's it. As of right now there's now natural process to break it down either, so my guess is if the team took any soil samples they would find plastic.

If we could really create a device to send us a billion years into the future it be smarter to spent that energy in developing our actual tech. I mean can we even create an energy source capable of such thing without it becoming a black hole? an alternate future " As they open the door of their time machine they realize they are standing in a beautiful forest with full of life, and they start walking they come across many man made buildings which is all kept in pristine conditions and in front of these building there is display which tell the history of these buildings. Still they couldn't find any humans they only see beautiful forest, ocean and animals. Eventually they reached in front of a big display which tell the story of what happened. After a million years and after few more world wars, Humans united with out borders and they start a global government. They made very quick progress and they start to move from type 0.70 civilization to civilization 1 by then AI was an integral part of human society which quickly advance human race to type 2. By then human body was consider a baggage so they started live in virtual world and if they want to experience, they can go into a avatar body and experience. The humans and AI decided to make earth as a museum for human kind and after 10million years later, they moved earth out of solar system and placed in different star system. By then humans where and AI (which become one) traveling across universe and when ever they want to visit earth they just teleported into earth and they can experience earth but after millions of later human race and AI by now it is merge into one reach type 3 no longer felt the need to visit earth to keep the planet from any disturbance but still they make sure to keep it as pristine. Earth air and water was pure and the climate was perfect for each animals, they saw dinosaurs they saw many extinct animals and even come across some humanoids. After reading this the human looked at each other scratch their head and went back to find their time machine." If humans survive few thousands years with out blowing up ourselves we will have technology to keep this planet whatever way we want.

To be able to do time travel, you need the permit from the Creator of this whole universe. And you won't get that permission, because such knowledge is unavailable.
There is a solid restriction in the law of the universe.
But if you are looking extend the lifespan of human species? That is still doable.

You should show the sun as white, its true color. Rather than orange.

Better guestion would be, what consequences would it have in the long term to bring back the samples from 1 billion years into the future to analyze. And would that be the actual reason why humanity developed to the stage of interstellar species? Because of your samples from the future? Travelling forward at intervals of 500 years for about 50,000 years would be so fascinating (so long as each journey was of an endurable length, or cryogenic hibernation was also possible). But time travel is of course impossible and will always will be, no matter how technologically advanced we might eventually become as a species.
