I been design drafting for 12 years and the one skill that helped me in my career is having what I like to call “that third eye” that third eye is your vision of see something that’s not reality yet or also seeing an object and drawing it 2d and also 3d.

Inch and feet dimensions are kinda unproductful

In my opinion, the reference project just made you slower, because now you feel that you need to match everything to the reference that they dispose to you instead of being able to do the exercise freely. It's not that hard to draw a door, window or a breakpoint from scratch and if they are watching they may not like the fact that you're copying objects.

Here in Qatar most of the software used is Autocad. I am one of the facade designers. The difference between me and other designers in our company is that I know how to use revit, inventor, rhino & retouching software like photoshop. Since not all designers know how to make 3D, I had to convert it to autocad so they could make a detailed drawing or shop drawing. Most IFCs from clients are also Autocad, and PDF drawings and sometimes with revit models as well.

In the 15+ years I been using autocad, the overwhelming amount of out of work architects apply for autocad jobs. And most of them just do not really know how to work the program. An architect is only ever as good as his cad operator. I’ve had shell plans come from huge arch firms, with sloppy, inaccurate work. The level of mediocrity across the board is outstanding, and a good cad operator still has very little value in the market. Since architects are entitled asses who don’t value the position. It’s very frustrating.

It's 2020, why are Firms still using Autocad? It's garbage slow junk.
