Hi Allyssa! Great content:) Would love to see a video on what maternity leave looks like/ how to manage it/ if you lost any of your caseload when owning your own practice!

Alyssa, thank you so much for posting this! I’ve been trying to do as much research as possible on this field. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do when I graduated with a degree in public health so I just started to think of my own natural traits and things I do everyday and they aligned really heavy with this field and I’ve been dedicated to the journey of becoming a therapist ever since and this video is very validating. Best!

It's great to stumble across a video like this. I have been interested in the field of psychology since my high school days, and have now been in therapy myself for 7 years (an MSW, and she is incredible! ❤️) I want to help people, but have been struggling all my adult life with a lesser-known chronic illness that makes being consistent really difficult. I didn't really believe in myself when selecting a post-secondary program, and being a creative person as well as an insightful one, chose a very limiting diploma in Interior Decorating. My chronic illness (PMDD, or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) is something that worsens with age, and every year I feel less and less capable of further schooling. I certainly don't have the energy or health to go full-time and work to support myself. Still, I wonder all the time where I might be if I had gone to school to become a LPC instead. I'm much more interested in helping people with what is going on inside than with things like design and decor. I debate at least trying to find a program that I could do part-time that has flexibility, but I am disabled and have my doubts as to whether someone with a disability could do this work. I have no expectations regarding becoming a supervisor or writing an award-winning novel, but would love to feel like I am capable of having some semblance of a career where I can really help people and use my unique experiences to do so - not to mention possibly enjoying a better quality of life due to a decent income. I'm just rambling now, and clearly still doubt myself a lot, but it's hard when your body just doesn't function the way you want it to. I'm glad there is a channel like this for folks new to the field as even I have asked a lot of these questions during my research on programs. I'm from Canada btw - so no idea if it works a lot differently here, but keep up the good work! ❤️

I really appreciated this whole video, and especially the part about the importance of maintaining boundaries and how it is possible to fall into not maintaining boundaries out of wanting to be nice to our clients. I think that some of the same traits that make a person a good fit for becoming a therapist (e.g., high empathy) also increases our risk these kinds of boundary violations, so I am glad you included that in your list.

Thank you so much for this! I am going back to school after motherhood and feel so intimidated by all the steps it takes to become a therapist BUT this reminded me of all the reasons I feel drawn to it why it makes sense for me even if it is still a bit far away. ❤

I’m 33 and just started my bachelors in psych to go onto do my masters. In HS I wanted to be a counselor but talked myself out of it for cost and time. Your content is so validating and helpful. Thank you!

I think psychiatrist, therapist and psychiatrist are all rubbish uncaring judgemental people.

I saw her video twice know I Just can't warm up to her.

I think she's fake and judgemental laughing at people behind their backs.

All about making money and trying to be famous having her 15min of fame.

I would have her as my therapist she not for me

They don't give a shit monkeys about people.

All they do read books give advice medication but no shit about the mental health issues whatever they are going through.

All about money.
I be deleting this message soon so O don't care if my messages gets deleted.

Bye😐😐

These traits are spot on - they're exactly what I've seen in students who are successful as a counselor. I really appreciated how you spoke to being reliable even when we're in our own pain.
