Chainsaw is always easier to start if it's been properly maintained. Afterward, the steps you take to start your chainsaw depend on whether you're starting your saw cold or warm. Starting A Cold Engine. When you start your chainsaw cold, you're starting a saw that hasn't been running. It might be the first time you've started your chainsaw that day. Pull the switch out and up to set it in choke position. 2. Press the decompression valve. 3. Press the air purge several times. 4. Pull the starter rope handle slowly until you feel resistance. Then pull firmly and rapidly until the engine fires and you hear a pop or a sound like a cough. This is the sound of the engine trying to start. The engine will not keep running at this point. 5. Press the switch down. • This will add air to the mixture of fuel being fed to the engine so that it can run consistently without being flooded. Pull the starter rope handle again. Keep pulling until the saw starts; once it does, it will continue to run. 6. Accelerate so that the engine low idles. Starting A Warm Engine. If you have recently used the chainsaw, turned if off for a few minutes, and are ready to use it again. 1. Mov the switch up and push down. 2. Press the decompression valve. Even with a warm saw, pressing the decompression valve is still a helpful step. 3.Press the air purge several times. Pressing this bulb will push excess air out of your fuel lines. 4. Pull the starter rope handle until the engine starts. 5. Accelerate so that the engine low idles.
