Dunwich is known as the lost city of England and dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. It was once a thriving port and capital of the East Anglian kingdom. Sadly storm surges and coastal erosion washed away much of the harbour buildings and land. The ruins of Greyfriars are the Grade Two listed remains of a Franciscan Friary founded in the late 13th century. Many of the buildings were destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the rule of Henry VIII. Phantom monks have reputedly been seen within the ruins of the priory and ghostly chanting has been heard. Mysterious dancing lights have also been seen close to the cliff edge resembling the legendary "Hobby Lanterns" or "will o' the wisp". In folklore these flickering lights are said to be held by a supernatural creature luring travellers to their demise. All Saints Church was one of the last of many ancient structures to be lost to sea. It was abandoned in the 1750s due to high maintenance costs. The graveyard was still in use until the 1820s but the cliff edge reached the church in 1904 and the tower fell in 1922. Legend says the distant sound of church bells can still be heard chiming from beneath the waves. In the churchyard of nearby St James’s Church is the remains of an old leper chapel. In 1175 laws were passed stating that those with leprosy were to be housed on the outskirts of town and cared for by the church. Most leper hospitals were usually built around a detached chapel. The last leper at Dunwich was buried in 1536. It then became a hospital for the disabled and chronically ill until it was abandoned in 1685. Ghostly shadow figures have reputedly been witnessed here.
