Shortly after this collision, 9V-SPK’s sister aircraft 9V-SPI, had its Tropical Livery removed.

Taiwanese are cheap. That should be in the checklist.

I was a drilling engineer for 25 years and in drilling for 40 and although it's not flying a plane it is crucial to run drills constantly and to consider everything and never take shortcuts. When in a critical situation as these pilots were they were focused on getting somewhere perhaps a personal appointment, who knows and they missed steps! You can put up as many guards as you want and some people will bypass them

I wuld suggest barriers and RED lights at the beginning, and end of a runway that is inoperative. That way there's no mistaking tha fact if a plane turns on to one of them.

After watching soon many Mentor Pilot videos I just can't watch any other like channel. It's just not the same.

This incident reminds me of the dangers of designing or setting up a system (in this case an airport) with an idealised user (the pilots here) who is infallible, and so giving zero margin for error: the construction equipment, bad lighting, lack of installed safety features and literally giving a line of green lights towards a deadly hazard. Any system with an inherent risk or danger should always be designed with the opposite assumption in mind - that people will inevitably make mistakes, and put measures in place to avoid that becoming a threat to peoples lives.

Best advise a boss ever gave me: "Asking for help isn't a sign of inadequacy. It's a mark of professionalism."

I know this is an aviation channel rather than a meteorology channel, but man,
typhoon travels from SOUTH to NORTH.
That's what a pilot should realize in flight planning.

I am not one to praise content creators, but well done for standing-up for those making mistakes. I have abandoned TV because of sloppy sensationalism and its hard to find channels even here where people do not try to make things sound worse then they are.

What happens to pilots after something like this ? Do they keep flying? They lose their licence ? They go to prison ?

The Crew was Busy, communication breakdown, cyclones is coming, heavy rain, visuals sight 400m, Abort the Flight , the CAPTAIN/ First Officer should have communicate.
ATC also didn't communicate with planes, and they didn't see the planes on their moniter/ on the runway visuals. When that happen ATC should call it off. Human Errors all around. Airport was NOT Up Date!!!

Even though we may point fingers at the crew, this was mainly Taiwan Airport's fault.
1. If the runway is under construction, shouldn't they put signs and RED lights at both Ends of the runway indicating the runway is closed for construction. VERY VERY POOR AIRPORT rules.
2. They did not have ground radar for tower to know the position of the plane on the tarmac
3. They did not have runway guard lights.
4. Runway entry lights.
and more.
So many factors contributed to this accident. Poor airport maintenance and not following minimum standards were the reason for the wrong turn of Singapore Airlines.

There wasn't any mention if the crew received a "Runway Disagree" alert triggered by 05L entered into the FMS and the aircraft lined up on 05R when adding takeoff power. This feature existed on the B-744F which I flew for SIA 2006-2013.

Combination of mistakes from the pilot and also from the airport.

Did I miss the part where the pilots discussed their plans for the different takeoff runway with the tower? And the part where they receive takeoff clearance?

These videos are very interesting but sad and tragic. I've only flown with ANZ / Quantus / Singapore air etc

How do you keep the front tire of the aircraft on the line on taxiing or even takeoff or during the movie at the airport

Why do they name runways 05 Left and 05 Right - surely it would be better to just number them individually so there's less confusion? Not saying this would have helped here but in times of confusion having very similar names for runways seems like a confusion that could easily be avoided.

Would have made more sense to put the concrete barriers at the end, preventing anyone from using that 'taxiway'.

Interesting that 80 hours in 30 days is considered a lot of flying time. I would think they would be over 100 hours for a full time pilot.

80 hours is 20 hours weekly, and 5 hours of flying time daily if working a 4 day schedule

Say what you want about missing signs, here's the biggest as far as I'm concerned. If you are directed to 5R, that means "runway 5, RIGHT". By definition then, there must be a 5L or "Runway 5 LEFT. FYI, if you don't know, runways are named for their compass heading, so Runway 5 would mean you're taking off in the direction of 50 degrees. If an airport only has a single runway facing a certain direction (say directly EAST), it would be "Runway 9", NOT "9L' or "9R" (as in 90 degrees, which is due EAST). The pilots had to know there was a "5R" if they had been directed to "5L". And, approaching the runway(s) on a taxiway, they HAD to know they had to cross 5R to get to 5L. How? Looking down the runway(s), L would be on the LEFT. Therefore, how could they think they were on 5L if they had NOT crossed 5R??? That is about as SIMPLE as it gets! As well, with runway centerline lights, the construction equipment would have obscured those lights. So, did they not notice? For three professionals to miss about 5 warnings signs is inexcusable. If you have to reduce directions to the lowest common denominator, pilots should not be paid so well. Fools those pilots!!!

Great video. Considering the conditions it was very poor that the flight crew continued without the PVD lining up. Also worth noting that a Cathay Crew that were supposed to be leaving slightly before the SQ flight had looked at runway conditions and decided to cancel their flight. The operational cost of having to reposition aircraft is substantial and SQ fleet management may have been a factor in putting pressure on the flight crew to depart that evening. The broadly Australian and British flight crews on Cathay in those day's would have been far less likely to react to management pressure than their Singaporean counterparts.

I'd love if you mentioned what happens to the surviving pilots after incidents like these. Do their career come to an end?

We REALLY need to invent fuel that is a lot more fire resistant…

Although this tragedy came about as a result of the pilot's honest mistake, what happened to them now that they survived?
1~ Were there repercussions against them?
2~ Did they continue their flying careers?
3~ If so, how possible is it to do so with such a disaster on their conscience? - honest mistake though it was?

More protocols for standing water and clearer alerts on runway… airport unsafe with works and poor lighting

The shocking thing is the pilots in this story is still flying on commercial airlines carrying passengers till today.
