The Controversy that almost ended the WCA

Yeah, I think we’re all really frustrated by this situation. However, I’m more towards the side that it’s completely inappropriate to call for the board’s removal. Who the hell is going to do their job? A lot of the people on the forum calling for the removal of the board aren’t well educated on what they even do. A lot of those people likely think they sit around all day and deal with little situations here and there, explaining their eagerness for revolution. Also, my local delegate literally left the WRC in protest, along with many others.

Honestly what ever the board does I hope they don’t do what speed-stacking did. If they do, it could be the downfall of cubing. But I think the board will see the mistakes that have been made and know not to do that.

To clarify something

Nobody wants to impeach board, people are reading the Magna Carta at face value and thinking that is its goal. It is not. The document is solely to invoke the meeting, which needed 5% of voting wca staff (full delegates and committee leaders) in order to pass. This meeting is to discuss ways to prevent board overstepping their boundaries in the future, and make it so the greater wca public has more faith in their decision making.

(And to discuss disqualifying 0.78)

I'm glad someone finally doing something about this born cheater!! I've been posting it for over a year that he's a cheater! None of his record should stand as it is. China has always been and will forever be the most corrupt country in the world when it comes to cheating no matter what is. The Olympus, cubing, etc... There's something about China wanting to be the best in the world and have bragging right, even when it means they have to tell their people to cheat to get it.

WCA Ibrahim Khanani is an idiot. I wonder how much he was paid bribe to act like an idiot when it comes to a clearly stated rule about palms touching the stackmat. His explanation is one of the most idiotic brain dead of an excuse for letting the Chinese cheaters keep the record. Someone needs to see how much money is lining his pocket.

I would fire the whole WCA board and bring in some competent people. There are many sports that require frame by frame analysis. Basketball, NFL, Track & Field, Horse racing, Baseball, Tennis, etc.. to ensure fairness in the sports. The WCA is trying to go backwards by 30 years.

WCA: We have examined ourselves and our own policy through the WRC and found no wrongdoing. Never mind the fact that we are being paid (bribed) to try to keep that false record on the books.

To be fair you didn't mention that the WRC failed to penalise a 0.53 single in 2022 which also broke regs by sliding. And it was the WRC that set the precedent that you can break the regs as long as you can't be seen doing it in real time.

So yes, I agree that the board should have gone with the WRC and DNFd the 0.78 average, and I'm happy that the board proposed the change in regs/guidelines. However, the WRC is also partly at fault here because they didn't penalise a previous case of sliding and also did not recommend to change the regs/guidelines before we had a major result involving cheating.

Lots of people dropped the ball, but this can be fixed: DNF the 0.78 (and the 2022 case) and move forward with the new rules 👍
Sliding is illegal, and if you do it, you should be DNFd. Here's hoping we can have that result without any bad blood between any of the WCA staff

Why doesn't somebody build a cube so that the timer starts as soon as the cube is touched or picked up, rather than as soon as the hands leave the pad

The frame by frame analysis regarding the timer display and Yiheng's hand is stupid. Cubers should be aware that displays have a delay. If you don't believe me, do this same analysis when he stops the timer and you will see that the display will still continue for 0.1 sec.

Whatever the eventual outcome, the current 2x2 records list will need to be archived. 4-pad mode must be introduced for a new set of 2x2 records. Anything else would be an untenable farce.

If sliding gets banned they’re going to have to introduce an additional rule where all solves are recorded because surely the way to get around this sliding rule is to just not record your solves and slide fast enough that it cant be seen by judges?

I mean, sliding is a new tequniqhe, but i think it should be penalized by how much you slide, for example, add a +2 for obvious sliding. cubers will be cautios not to abuse this tequnique

Yiheng needs to understand that it could be decades before some rules committee will actually remove sliding scores. Especially if there is corruption. The problem is Yiheng will be long retired by that point. If it's like Billy Mitchell? He actually is great at the game but because of the scandal decades later? Everyone just sees him as a fraud. If I was Yiheng and his trainer? I'd be all for removing the sliding scores, while he's young, so he has time to get actual scores over the next 10 years.

Yeah DNGing Yihengs .78 seems to me like it should be avoided. Hes only being looked at because he set the WR. Tons of others that wpuldnt get DNFd because theyre not high profile, or dont video tape their solves.
And the WRC said it was fine, until pelple protested then recanted, but the WR was done under the assumption it was fine. We shouldnt be punishing people.for doing something that was explicitly stated to be fine.

The other issue is the WRC creates, what is essentially legislation for cubing competitions and also trys to enforce them? Theres a pretty clear conflict of interest there.

But cubeing is not the only sport that have a record thats done with a teknik thats illegal today, longjump have the same issue

Doing a solve with your wrists on the timer for over a second isn't sliding - it's cheating.

so what exactly is the regulation now because if it is illegal then yiheng's record shouldn't count. if u can't use frame by frame than Hassan's record is pretty obvious that he stopped before he was done whereas yiheng is just sliding but no exactly stopping the timer before he's done when u see it in full speed. I still think its dumb to let it stand but i just wanna see why they did it.

In the future you should only use the Gen 5 timer in 4 pad mode.

you are meant to stick to the rules but sometimes situations arise where it is necessary to break a rule for the betterment of the community and the 0.78 is one of those cases

WCA could still even split due to this, it's pretty touch and go situation for a while.

Picking up and putting down times are not solving times and should not be included. The whole way solving times are measured is so outdated, even wrong. AI cubes should be used. Inspection times OTOH are solving times, and should be included. How fast someone can inspect and start on a good solve is material. There should be no inspection, if we want to have true solving times. Saying the world record is 3.13s is not accurate at all. It should be something like 6s (based on Max's times).
