genuine question, what are the applications of this? if we're using manual focus, we just have to roll the roller until our subject becomes clear, right?

Late to this video, but isn’t this opposite of what it should be? Say if I have a zoom lens (70-200 mm for example). If I start tracking the dog at 70mm and the dog starts running away, I would start zooming in towards the 200mm end - in other words my focal length would increase, not decrease. What am I missing? Thank you.
