Teagarden, with or without bell, is always magnificent.

Hey, so everyone knows, he never FORGOT his bell! That was part of a special act when he took the bell off, replaced it with a water glass and played some nice jazz! I personally saw BIG GATE do this at the Metropole on 7th Ave just above 52nd St in NYC . Being a young trombonist who held Teagarden as an IDOL (which I STILL do), I couldn't believe that he did this. And, lo and behold, he played it in tune! The audience at this bar was thrilled - most didn't know what was "going on" but it was quite a novelty to this trombonist who had arrived "on the scene" about 6 months earlier! He was one of the greatest ever! This was about Oct of 1963 and he passed away January 1964. When I caught up with him after that set and said "wow" to him - he just laughed and said something like "thanks, Kid." Always polite, gentile.
