THE FORTIFIED CHURCH OF PREJMER
The Evangelical church of Prejmer (Tartlau in German), in Gothic style with Cistercian influences, was erected in the 13th century. Only two fresco parts have been preserved of the initial painting that covered the entire church. The triptych Gothic altar, painted on both sides, goes back to 1450.
A fortified wall, 12-m tall and 3-4 meters thick, surrounds the edifice, which houses 272 rooms disposed in honeycomb, on four levels. The rooms served as storage place for vittles in times of peace, and as dwellings in time of siege.
Within the citadel there is a Saxon ethnographic museum that displays cult items, clothing, painted furniture, and ceramics
