Most fictional thing about this movie is how absolutely capable and unstoppable leader this President was.

Bill Pullman's delivery of this speech was absolutely unparalleled.

I will literally never forget this scene.

If this had been a real event, and President Whitmore had been a real president, I would not hesitate to follow him into battle.

Not only does he see these young men and women are nervous and unsure, and ddecides "I should do something about this" (without being told to by his advisors like real presidents would need to be (and even then only if he can do it in front of the whole nation for PR)) then delivers an incredibly moving (if short) completely impromptu speech, but then he puts his own life on the line and actually leads his military into battle. Putting himself physically on the front lines like a true leader.

You won't find a single politician (in the US anyway) who would lead like President Whitmore did.

All these years later and I still get chills when I hear this speech

As an American, I'm not very patriotic. I never had any urge to serve to fight in some BS politics to serve the defense industry for them to make money.
