I've read in several accounts that the bison hunters would just remove the tongues & ship them back to the East coast by rail. I've also read that they shot the bison from the moving rail cars. As Ms LaPier states, the virtual extinction of the First Nations' source of food, housing (tipis made of buffalo hides) & tools was part of a systematic policy of genocide. The National Geographic carried a recent article about Canadian & American residential schools & the unconscionable rate of death among the children ripped away from their families & their culture.

Estimates I’ve read is that there are 200,000 to 500,000 Bison in America today including the 5000 or so in Yellowstone. There are ranches and other places they exist. They were supposedly down to 300 at the end of the 1800’s from 30-60 million in the 1500’s. Wolves also suffered a similar fate. At the start of the 1900’s there were wolves in every continental states. I’ve read estimates of 500,000 to 2 million. By the 1960s there were about 300 left in Michigan and Minnesota. Now I think they are found in 13 states and there are about 5000 in the country.
