I think that place should be restored. If restored it would be gorgeous. Of course you would want to do a spiritual cleansing of the place. Kick the demons out in Jesus name. Being an old insane asylum it pretty likely has demonic activity in it.

With all the exploring you do it wouldn't be a bad idea to have pepper spray for self-defense or an HDR50 or HDR68 CO2, less than lethal gun from Umarex. In the event of an attack from a squatter it would give you time to get away. After aiming the thing at a possible assailant you probably won't have to even use it.
