I haven't heard anyone mention this, but in the last 40 years every sitting president that sought reelection had a terrible first debate.

That's what I remember but I wasn't sure so I looked up some old polling.

You can check for yourself. According to articles on the first POTUS debates of 2012, 2004, 1992, 1984, the clear winners were: Mitt Romney, John Kerry, Ross Perot, and Walter Mondale respectively.

1996 might be an exception but I could not easily find poll results for it. And 1992 was upended by the presence of Ross Perot who many believe cost the first Bush his reelection.


Presidents seem to bounce back for the second debate after getting bad press on the first. Joe will show up next debate better rested and better prepaired. Guarunteed.


POTUS is probably the most stressful and time demanding job ever invented. All of them seem to age rapidly while in office. It'd be surprising if any of them had time to prepare adequately. (The obvious exception being Donald Trump, who spent the majority of his time in office trolling celebrities, newspeople, civil servants, and polititions on Twitter. According to people who were there he was lazy as hell. Skipped all his briefings. Couldn't have known what the hell was going on. And didn't give a shit. )

There's something that a lot of Americans don't realise, John Roberts is a Canadian. He was born and raised in Canada, went to the University of Toronto, one of the finest university's in the world, at a subsidised rates. I don't put him down for this, why wouldn't he take advantage of that, after all he is Canadian. What bothers me the most, he rails against ideas that he benefited from as a Canadian. John Roberts used to be a VJ for the Canadian television station called Much Music. He did an ok job playing the videos of the corresponding musicians appearing in the videos. He introduced the wrong videos sometimes but he mostly got it right.
