This video is not up to date anymore. The RTX 3080 severely throttles due to memory overheat if you have no thermal pad to make contact between the backplate and the back of the PCB where the memory chips are, even though the chips are actually in the front of the card. GDDR6X runs crazy hot (~100°C). It’s a common issue in Gigabyte 3080s, and other manufacturer’s models, though in mainly affects people who do numerical computing/mining. I had my 3080 Vision gain up to 20% performance after adding thermal pads to the backplate (and no, removing the backplate altogether does not help, so it does genuinely provide cooling).
ОтветитьYou forgot to test the card without the copper backplate.
ОтветитьI have a R 9295 X2 and I have some chip (memories) cooled by my backplate whith termal pads. So on some cards the backplate is not only here for have a nice look. (Sorry if my english is bad I'am french and I don't use Google translate).
ОтветитьI know this is an old video... but the backplate on my 3090 contacts the vram on the backside of the PCB. The plate itself sits at 70c while mining and it's too hot to touch right where the vram contacts it on the underside. I had to attach heatsinks to the plate and add fans to wick that heat off my vram.
Ответитьnowadays all gpus have a backplate
ОтветитьThe bite-sized quarter coincidingly trot because birthday oddly attempt forenenst a tasty half-sister. dashing, plant criminal
ОтветитьIt's flir not flur
ОтветитьOpen test beds are kinda bs for testing thermals.
Ответитьi ran into a voltage limit, said no ambient pascal overclocker ever, you ran into a thermal limit unless you were sub 45c
Ответитьwhat about that vram temps
ОтветитьWith the 3000 series's gddr6x it actually does help
Ответитьwhat about memory junction temp? what about fan speed? poor vid, congrats
ОтветитьNow they do lol
Ответитьif it doesnt cool something then why is it burning hot when i touch it
Ответитьwhatever happened to this guy at ltt?
ОтветитьI'm from 2021 and Linus just release video about water cooling backplate rtx 3090 and they actually work
ОтветитьTHIS HAS AGED LIKE MILK
ОтветитьA revisit would be appreciated.
ОтветитьThe copper backplate looked like the copper plate in a cpu water block. Probably a terrible idea, but what about water cooling the copper backplate?
Ответить3090: hold my RAM
ОтветитьMe blast the first part of the video my mum thats sitting right next to me
Ответить3090: laughs
ОтветитьWell this aged really fucking poorly
ОтветитьI miss when luke made videos
Ответитьlol HAHAHAHAHAH this aged well
Ответитьlol they need that in 2021
ОтветитьLaughs in 3090 water block
Ответитьit does help with memory on the back on the card to cool the memory with the rtx 3090 or 3080
ОтветитьWhat about VRM temps?
ОтветитьIt's now 2022, and this aged so awfully
ОтветитьWell this video didnt age well lol.
Ответить30 series is on the block now
ОтветитьRTX3090 has entered the chat.
ОтветитьMaybe in a case with more airflow than a testbench it would perform better with tha backplate
ОтветитьHei linus for now EKWB making water blok cooling for back GPU KEKW
ОтветитьThis guy was incredibly annoying to listen to. He was annoyed because of the, excessive, little screws? BTW if heat is being dissipated and removed via passive air, then its working. Maybe not immediately, or reducing core temp; however, it certainly helps keep it from building core temperature.
ОтветитьSame power consumption? No thermal throttling? Same frequencies and voltages etc? Same fan speeds? Any chance the thermal paste you used was better when you rebuilt it? Any chance there's significant case fans blowing air across the back of the card?
Could be that the back plate is as much a net insulator due to poor thermal contact/interface conductivity, as it is a heatsink? Theoretically more cooling surface area = cooler temps. Could we use thermal paste instead of/as well as a pad to help?
The 3 degrees it was reducing, it was adding back on with the built in led!
ОтветитьGDDR6X: Well, Well, Well, How the turntables...
Ответитьyou need to push it to the limit in order to see if the head sink helps. if the normal operating temperature is 67 C, there is no where to significantly reduce it. if you push it to 100C, you need to disperse the heat and test if this copper plate does that
ОтветитьEven when this video came out it was wrong I achieved superposition world record (for a titan X maxwell) by adding a back plate
ОтветитьI feel like this should be looked into more these days.
ОтветитьThink it's time to revist it this. 2024 gang
ОтветитьIts crazy they still want $400 for this card 😀
Ответить67% yea but the fan speed are diff with n without the backplate
Ответитьgtx 1080
holy shit , it has been a while huh
Came here from a WAN show mentioning this series in December 2024. It would be amusing to revisit this one with the labs setup and to compare with newer graphics cards just to really drive the nail in the coffin.
