When Hertz talks about completing a complete fleet changeover by the end of the first quarter of next year, does this mean that they will be completely reverting to ICE vehicles or simply that they will be choosing other EV manufacturers' offerings instead of Tesla's?

Personally, I think that they may be still stuck in a slightly outdated mindset that was appropriate to the mechanical wear & tear of ICE vehicles but is not necessarily fit for the electrification of transportation, since EV's don't have an engine or associated parts, & thus a relatively quick fleet turnover is somewhat premature. The fixation on depreciation needs to change, and they really should be keeping these vehicles for at least another 3yrs. Even Octopus Energy in the UK who have an EV leasing division are re-leasing vehicles as long as they are in good enough condition, and why wouldn't they? There's less capital expenditure required for fleet renewal.

The Chevy Bolt has reliability issues per Consumer Reports. It is dicey to even consider one unless you enjoy spending time in repair shops.

Consumer Reports list only 4 EV that are recommended and have above average reliability: Nissan Arriya, Porche Taycan, Lexus RZ, and Hyundai Ioniq 6. 2024 IIHS rated several models which attained the Top Safety Pick honor, including the Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q8 E-Tron, Genesis Electrified GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Lexus RZ, Nissan Ariya, Rivian R1T and R1S, and Subaru Solterra, showcasing the safety advancements across a diverse range of EVs. It is clear that the Nissan Arriya and Lexus RZ met reliability and safety. I only wish that they were affordable.

Plastics are a fact of life in just about every facet of our modern day lives, right down to the cars we drive, the IT equipment we use, packaging and of course, solar panels, wiring coatings & harnesses, the list is virtually endless. The writing of this comment is prompted by Nikki's remarks in the ATMOS sponsorship ad about giving the fossil fuels industries the middle finger. TBC: I'm not picking on anyone for wanting to give the fossil fuels industries the middle finger, I do too, but humanity has so much of how we do things intimately tied to plastic and its various applications, it's truly hard to grasp how we will finally manage to divorce ourselves from fossil fuels in as timely a manner as is necessary to prevent anthropogenic induced runaway climate change. Virtually every eco-friendly product that springs to mind has very high percentages of plastic componentry, including, ironically, the packaging they tend to come in.

Even modern medicine is highly dependent on plastics for a whole range of products ranging from disposable drip bags & tubing, disposable sterile dressing packs, medicine bottles & packaging, even medicines themselves and a gazillion other things besides, as Kate Walton-Elliott can confirm.

In conclusion, the total abandonment of fossil fuels usage is a truly sticky conundrum.

In Italy 🇮🇹 for example, they lasted a few months… in Australia 🇦🇺 they also didn’t last much… 🤷‍♂️
But just keep crying “blu 🔵 people”… 👍 keep crying…

Nice job. Will you further speculate about Elon running the DOGE department and what effect it will have on the EV market? I'm a deficit hawk like Elon is, but I'm concerned that his efforts will further slow down EV adoption and hurt EV sales, including Tesla's (qualifying EVs/individuals currently receive up to $7500 point of sale discounts on new EVs, and $4k on used EVs, plus U.S. battery manufactories receive $45/kwh). These two subsidies seem like low hanging fruit for budget cuts along with the Biden infrastructure electrification efforts. This seems counter to Tesla's stated mission, doesn't it? Though complicated internationally, I'd prefer DOD cuts. According to Google, " In 2023, the U.S. spent $916 billion on its military, which was over 40% of the world's total military spending. The U.S. military budget is roughly the size of the next seven largest military budgets combined." A lot of this money is wasted through cost plus contracts which actually pays for contractors to run over budget. Very inefficient. If they drain the swamp, I'm hopeful that they will put a lot of thought into it. However, it appears that a lot of chaos will result assuming that all of Trump's appointments make it through the confirmation process. Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Moving production from Germany to Thailand. And Re: Ford having difficulty selling the EVs it makes in Europe. And Re: The general difficulties of German auto makers ---
Richard Wolff has pretty much explained it. Germany used to have economical access to Russian energy resources. Geopolitics has forced this to stop. (now China has that access instead).

Now, manufacturing costs in Europe and especially Germany are higher than they used to be.

If the EPA rescinds California's ability to set its own clean air rules, wouldn't that be considered federal government overreach? Wouldn't this be something that should be put to the California voters just like abortion is in every state? I do regard clean air and water as fundamental rights! Also, Bernie's view that healthcare should be a fundamental right seems equitable.

Yes, Porsche sells expensive cars, but they are also "class leading in so many metrics" according to Kyle Connor of Out of Spec. A Porsche Taycan ($125k) recently won the Out of Spec Seattle to Boston I-90 EV race because of its superior charging (320 kw peak), 97 kwh battery, and 3 miles/kwh efficiency. The Porsche Taycan, heralded as a next generation EV, won easily over the other 8 EV contenders. The new Tesla model 3 long range rwd ($42.5k, 3.8 mi/kwh, 82 kwh battery) came in second. Surprisingly, the Lucid Air Grand Touring ($130k, 118kwh battery) came in next to last (should have been second or third) because the crew didn't charge when the car told them to and ran out of electric juice towards the end!

While I absolutely adore my 2022 Ford Mach-e after 40,000 miles, I drive less than 100 miles a week in my wife's 2017 VW Golf Alltrack with only 73,000 miles. As for Elon Musk, I can see that he's maybe moved on from spurring the EV revolution after buying Tesla. He's now into artificial intelligence as the next shiny object to chase.

Vehicular efficiency is mandatory to aborting climate change, and a huge portion of the world, and the US, understand this. The demand for hyper-efficent, cleaner transportation is high, and, I think, pretty impervious to the lack of governmental support. Or derision in the case of our incoming administration.

Aptera is the bell weather and thier strength has always come from thier product, which is turning into precisely the vehicle that they engineered it to be. I anticipate great success for Aprera, and they WILL be noticed and emulated.

I live in the Pacific NW too, neighbors, and I am terribly concerned with the ecological effects of the coming years. (The perfect shitstorm hitting the largest wind turbine farm...) but it COULD hurry the evolution of transportation along.

Love you both.

Worth mentioning that this is the first episode that didn't get recommended to me by the algorithm first thing on Saturday. I had to search for it. I'm a long time subscriber, and I pretty much always watch/listen on Saturday morning when I am making coffeee and such. But for whatever reason, the algorithm thought I shouldn't see this episode. And looking at the numbers, 9.9k on Wednesday, I'm guessing that I'm not the only one. What didn't the algo like about this episode?

If I were to guess, it's probably the political commentary. The algo has a pretty good read on me, and usually does a fairly good job at keeping me firmly in my echo chamber (and we are ahem not in the same echo chambers). But despite my opposition with your political inclinations, I still value the non-political, on-topic content of the channel. You do detailed and thoughtful reviews, with high-quality visuals and production. Anyway, just wanted to give you the feedback that the algo seemed to dislike you this week.

The EV credits are entirely unfair to Lucid and Rivian. These EV credits massively favor Tesla, as it is the only company able to make large quantities of EVs, as all others loose massive amounts of money and therefore cannot expand production. Trump will cut EV, Oil, and Gas subsidies. That would help all EVs. Let s watch if he keeps that promise.

COP 29 is a festival of corrupt Western liberal elites, flying in on their private jets, because they are far more important than the peasants who must save CO2. Javier Miley from Argentina is not far right, he is a centrist conservative economist who is cleaning up Argentina s Marxist corruption. And as COP29 shows, the Global Warming Hysteria IS a Marxist hoax. Otherwise Obama, Gates, Pelosi, Kerry, and on and on..., would not fly on private jets and buy 10s of million dollar homes right at the beach where the Global Warming sea level rise supposedly will swamp them in just a few years. It is all a lie.

First, I don't believe Musk has any interest in EVs at this time. He's moved on. But Tesla (cars) aren't cheaper than alternatives, so I don't think losing credits actually helps them particularly. Sales of all EVs will presumably drop and they would need to cut profit to get those sales back.
In the end, the US will just be left behind.

Cost of Durable goods feeds into inflation. One of them is cars, specifically EVs. If the high cost of an EV has led to inflation, inflation lead to the downfall of the current US administration. EV advocates pushed too far which lead to the downfall. They gambled everything and lost everything. It is time to look in the mirror. EV advocates are responsible for results in US elections. IMHO.
