VELLO HARRY LIPPAND

Born: March 11, 1957 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA



Vello Lippand was born in Hennepin, Minnesota, USA to Piedmond and Helvi Maie (Soonpaa). They moved to California in 1963, and this turned Vello into an Garden Grove, Orange County ‘surf boy’. His father was a champion Bridge player.
Vello graduated from Rancho Alamitos High School in 1975.

Shortly after graduation, he became good friends with Jerry Richardson whom introduced him to the Jet Ski®.

Vello, Jerry Richardson, Doug Silverstein, both 2015 Wake of Fame inductees, (and all the Silverstein brothers) became fast friends.


Vello is a long standing Kawasaki Motors Corporation USA (KMC) employee. His journey began in the 1970’s however.

He was a frequent rider at Fox’s Snug Harbor owned by the Lathrop Family. When the family decided to let up the lease, Dave Sammons spoke with Robert Montgomery about setting up a second Trans World Recreation (TWR) dealership and rental operation.

Vello was one of the original crew members who worked for Robert Montgomery (2015 Wake of Fame Inductee). Robert owned Trans World Recreation (TWR) and Vello was one of some outstanding first generation riders. On the 1979 Team Trans World Recreation attended Regional Championships in Birmingham Alabama, with Doug and Billy Silverstein, Bruce Stjernstrom, Dave Sammons and Vello Lippand with his girlfriend. They all participated in JS440 races in the formative years of this sport.

• Competed in closed course; slalom; oval-speedway; endurance in river and ocean, surf and obstacle course events - and poker runs
• Member of the Wave Busters exhibition team

Vello Lippand was one of the members of the WAVEBUSTERS, a freeride group organized by the Father of Freeride himself, Mr. Randy Laine in 1981 (2015 Wake of Fame Creative Impact inductee). They were based out of Oceanside, California but traveled around to coastal areas to put on synchronized riding shows and exhibitions.’

Vello's career with Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. in the Research and Development department covered 27 years.

The Wake of Fame awards honor those in the Personal Water Craft (PWC) community as pioneers in the sport and Water Rescue professionals who use Rescue Water Craft (RWC).
