It seems that most young hairdressers don’t know how to do pixie cuts. They seem to be out of style here in the Midwest in the US. I have only had 2 hair dressers one, in Dallas, one in Indiana who knew how to do a pixie cut. I got it cut yesterday and it was not a good cut. I will keep searching for the right hair dresser! The hard part about moving to different states is it takes awhile to find the right hairdresser!!

Most stylists don’t posses your level of skill or dedication to their craft. I have had so many lousy haircuts over the years. They don’t listen and don’t take face shape or hair type into consideration. Also if the stylist doesn’t style their own hair, dress smartly or wear makeup, run.

This is such AWESOME info!! Especially the details on texturing and the difference between shears! I had no idea!! I wish you would explain which direction to hold the texturing shears tho...I have heard that is important too....i just gave myself some long bangs to get rid of some overly blonde and processed hair around my face and you nailed it! Looks chopped... and my hair is very thick. Gonna try this! I'm totally that person that has zero professional training that messes around with my hair between appts for better or worse 😢😂 this is super interesting and helpful info Justin! Thanks! And he's right guys watch out for cutting those knuckles!! OUCH

Its so so hard to find a stylist who knows how to do this type of cut right. My old stylist who retired would cut a V (similar to the M) in the back and it was fabulous. I've have to explain this so many times to different people over the years and it was like they had no idea what i was requesting - I was so excited to see you talking about this!

Thank you! This is excellent. Many years ago, I wanted to have my haircut when I went to Italy. So, instead of getting my hair cut before the trip, I kept it a little longer. It was the most amazing haircut. Essentially, all I had to do was shake out my hair after coming out of the shower and a little gel. When I asked my hairdresser to look at what was different, she said there was nothing! Maybe different shampoo! So, I began my search to understand texturizing and point cut. And, when COVID and a broken hip happened at the same time, I began practicing cutting my own hair. I watched videos and carefully practiced cutting my hair. I was one of those people who spent a lot of money on my hair. And, frankly, I really prefer my hair today! And, I especially appreciate this video. Thank you, again!

Make your own corner mirror to see all sides of your head when you want to cut your own hair by sticking mirrors on the insides of bathroom cabinet doors (or any cupboard doors for that matter) with doors that open away from each other or on the outside of cupboard doors that open towards each other. Or, if you have a spare corner anywhere, strategically stick mirrors where the walls meet. Or, stick mirrors on hinged plywood panels which can stand up by themselves while you cut and which can then be folded away for storage.

Hi Justin... I stumbled upon your channel. (sort of long story how). But anyway. I have a question for you... I have a pixie, what I call a semi long pixie.
I am 66 yrs YOUNG (lol) and I have been loosing my hair since I was 30. I HAD very curly thick hair. It would stand out like a pyramid when I was younger.
I am at the stage now that it is starting to show on top. Dermatologists call it female pattern baldness. I am taking oral minoxidil but not really working. Got any suggestions or if there is a way to make hair not look like it is falling out? Someone suggested keeping pixie and getting a topper. We tried the bob but the hair on top is way to thin to make the bob loo full enough. Any help is extremely appreciated. TYIA

My hairdresser quit me after my second visit. She had cut about112'' off at the first visit taking a huge amount of weight of my hair and cut it how I had asked her. The issue that I had with my in shock hair was that when it grew out it wanted to act like a spoiled child. We discussed what I didn't like about the way it was and agreed to let the top grow longer and go from there. I do have 2 cow licks and they were really acting badly. Nonetheless, we scheduled the next appointment but the next morning I received a text essentially stating she didn't feel like she was the right person to work with me on my hair. I've never been fired by a hairdresser before so I was confused and disappointed. I thought we'd do well together🤷

I have paid attention to all these point except the texturizing--what about CUrLY HAIR?? Can you "texturize" curly hair?? I love my M, always angle and leave longer on top but I do not want to blow out my curls, so that real shaped pixie even if cut accurately is often not achieved (espy w humid weather)

Several of those pictures are not true pixie cuts. Pixies have the ears cut out and short on top also. Top "volume" is just a short haircut. I'm old enough to remember the original pixie cut.

Do not texturize or point-cut curly, wiry hair. Blunt cut only. Strategic de-bulking with thinning scissors for the sake of the hairstyle is ok but should be rare on wiry, curly hair.

My stylist of over 20 years died from COVID. She was in an upscale salon and I paid a lot of money but she was worth it. Now I go to kind of a dated old salon and the woman I found hardly charges me anything and gives me some of the best haircuts I've ever had. Dont judge by the look of the salon!

Point cutting vs texturizing question: I have poker straight hair (not even a curve... it's very stubborn to manipulation, too). It's not particularly thick hair (i.e. individual strands), but it's dense overall. Any bluntness in the ends shows on hair like this. Is my hair more suited to point cutting or texturizing. They usually do a bit of both, but right now, I'm feeling my hair is a solid mass (short bob, not pixie). I want some tousled movement to it. Just wondering what to ask for.

Thank you for the Pixie tips. Oh god - I asked my hairdresser to leave the "M" neckline. She always cut mine straight across and I hated it. She was quiet offended when I said I think I'd "like" to leave the "m" line at the back of my neck this time. She was definitely not impressed that I was the one making a hairdresser request. Obviously some hairdressers are extremely "delicate".

I have been fighting to get her to do the right job.., she keeps saying to have more fullness at the top you need it shorter on top. We are talking my hair is short. The top is 2 1/2 inches and it needs cutting again for the sides and back…. I hope to have her see what I want, and yes I have taken in photos. This helps.. maybe I can convey exactly what I want.

I hate my Pixie. I hate it because my stylist moved out of state, I have now been to 5 different salons, 5 different stylist….all who claimed they do Pixies. I have yet to have a decent haircut since I lost my stylist. They tend to give me a man’s haircut. The last stylist informed me that what I wanted was not a style???? Anyway I let her cut my hair, although she would not go as short as I requested……because what I wanted was not a style. Now, here I am 2 weeks later and my hair is falling into my eyes and now I’m once again trying to find an actual stylist who knows what the hell they’re doing. I can’t afford to go to a stylist every two weeks for a trim because the stylist claims what I want is not a style.
Absolutely frustrating.

My first pixie was cut just like the photo you showed and I hated it. Since then, I found a lady that does an amazing job. The only thing she doesn’t do is the M at the back but my hairline is fairly straight. I don’t have much of an M. I’m going have a try doing that because I absolutely love short hair. Thanks for all your Tips and tricks! I often trim my own hair to go longer in between cuts as mine is very thick, coarse and wavy/curly. I love thinning and texturizing shears. Otherwise I have a huge bush on top of my head. Love your videos.

I get my hair cut at a local beauty school and have very rarely ever been not happy with the results. I always ask for a razor cut and for a student who is interested in learning how to do one or who loves doing them. The instructors are always near to help, show, and advise. I tell them that I look at this as doing a service by providing them hair to cut, since I’m no longer able to donate my blood at the local blood center. I also tell them not to worry about my freaking out if they accidentally cut it too short because it will always grow out. This usually puts them more at ease and I have a relaxing time, including a wash and scalp massage. I try to stick with whatever student I get, until she graduates, then ask her to recommend the next student. This has worked well for many years. They do all the things that are in this video, so I know I’ve done well with my choice of “salons”.
