If you want to make it able to grind from either side can you make a slide for the shaft?
I'm thinking like a lathe bed with a prism to keep it straight and mount your shaft on a cross slide to that so it can slide back and forth in front of the wheel. Maybe a small bed on two precision shafts with circular bearings.

Saw the hex nuts loosened with long nose pliers …. As an engine builder I had to go

Hey, Give them a break........it is $170 USD.........a Deckel piece like this "clapped out" 50 years old is $500........so this is cheap....fix it up!!..Part of the entertainment...I buy "stuff" from China all the time....just rework it. Cheers from Aus.

I made my previous comment without watching your Vid until the end....I apologize.....SO I persevered and yes, you are right. That set of castings are pretty poor. I purchased a complete one of these and I have to say for Aus $950 it is sensational.. 5-hour touch-up and now better tolerances than my ability to make use of...I did search and looked very carefully at the photos on eBay, paint, castings, etc before I found one I was happy with. A shame you purchased it from a dodgy manufacturer. There are plenty of "them" BUT some good ones too. It just annoys me sometimes that people expect German Toolroom quality at bargain-basement prices. Good luck with the project and stay Covid safe. Cheers from Aus.

Hi Jesse.....they say that when you think of something it's because someone else has already thought of it and the vibrations of the thoughts get transmitted....I dunno, I am building PRECISELY the same set up you have shown and for the same reasons.

I owned a Deckel SO for some years and never used it so sold it to a lady who needed it more.........now I need it....LOL.

Having doodled a design for a Deckel type grinder on my graphics pad in Jan of this year I bought the same piece of mechanism you bought for the tool movements on EBAY for A$380.

I'm using a .12 kw 3 phase 3,000 rpm motor with an adaptor to mount a 100mm diam 400 grit diamond cup wheel for the grind head and will mount it on a steel box to the left as in a Deckel.........the difference is the motor will slide across the box on rails to allow both sides of the wheel to be used.........I see from the comments that Bustedknuckles suggests this idea too.

The tool holder swing mechanism I bought was quite good and well made too and now I'm also going to make an ER25 adaptor to hold drills for 4 facet grinding and end mills too as the collets for this are unobtainable and the ER chuck will give me a 1mm to 16mm diam range.

The motor mounting box will be bolted to a hollow steel base that is 350mm long X 250mm wide......the base will be 30mm high and 6mm thick with a 6mm thick surround welded to it.

In addition, the motor will be able to swivel about 30 deg and also tilt 20 deg up and down.......... this is for doing cutter helix grinding for the primary and secondary angle setting the same way the CUTTERMASTER uses to set the angles too.

At the moment the project is half way there so with the cold OZ Winter days of 10 to 12 deg C there is a lack of enthusiasm to spend much time in the workshop but it's getting there.
Thanks for your detailed explanation of your build....it gives me inspiration etc.

nice video, My head like that just arrived a couple days ago, and I was wondering if anyone had videos on it... just subscribed and will watch your other videos to see what you came up with.... I used to have a stand alone tool and cutter grinder but it took up to much space, and i sold it over a decade ago... of course then I wanted one again... my plan is to make a 5C arbor for it, since I already own all sizes(inch & metric) of the collets, and all shapes (square & hex).... like yours, the head will require some finish work.... I also plan to just use my lathe tool post grinder as the grinding thingy... thanks again for sharing!

This is awesome, I have a really nice Tryally mini QCTP for a sherline lathe and it uses some very small 3mm carbide lathe tooling, but I have no way to sharpen them or make my own, especially on a regualr grinder so this is something I may actually do so I can make these tools and sharpen them, thanks.
