You definately should take your mom to the West Lake, in Hangzhou, it is steeped in legends, so many stories, is one of many of China's historical sites which are on the world heritage site. Many legendary stories are centred, or told about the West Lake.
Even a few well known Traditional Chinese music pieces were written from this area. It's a historical, very beautiful, area, with a lot of legendary stories written by many famous people in China's history, you simply have to go to Hangzhou's West Lake.

You are very right about close minded. In Asia, people are very open, the reason why mental illnesses aren’t really issues there. There are weapons in Asia but no mass shooting. People are open, friendly, kind, nice, and so harmless. They have friends and families so they see purposes and reasonings in life.

China was almost nothing after WWII. In matters of just ~80 years, look at China now. The US took ~400 years with inventions and discoveries from the Christians but China almost none but a lot of attacks, harassments, and false accusations.

Kunming is definitely more safe than Hillbrow, downtown JHB, Pretoria, Mamelodi or at Voortrekker Monument. I love your mum's Afrikaans accent, baie gaaf. China is awesome, period.
