I had a similar experience in a Russian Orthodox Church once several years ago
(I am Asian btw and some people think I shouldn't practice Orthodox Christianity even though I am indeed an Orthodox Chirsitan) the first time I visit this church put on a friendly smile, and the Russian there treat me like this "non human who doesn't belong there", it was not a pleasant experience, then I saw it on this TV show that in Russian culture they think people who smile is retarded and stuff, so the next time when I visited that church, I put on the most vicious look on my face, I gave everyone a death stare when their eyes meet mine, they end up become so afraid of me that they invented social distancing way before covid 19 is a thing lol
