The elephant in the room is that the 30-06 has excessive recoil for Whitetail Deer. That's why I use a 270 with an improved ballistic coefficient at 27 caliber, over a 30 caliber bullet.

Whatever has the more boxes of ammo on the shelf is the best cartridge. In the range of comparable cartridges there is not enough difference to make a big difference but ammo vs no ammo really counts big time.

Fake news! Lol I’m a short fat magnum guy. I mean my first rifle was a 7mm wsm in 2003 and the 06 will never die in my lifetime.

I love my 30-06. I can hunt anything in North America just short of grizzly bear, and could probably drop a grizzly but if I ever got to go after that I’d probably go overkill lol. And my 30-06 can hunt most plains game in Africa. There’s just an influx of so many calibers that’s unneeded although I get it. But I used to hunt with federal premium nosier ballistic tip 165 grain until federal stopped making them. I just swapped to federal tipped fusion 180 grain. With that I can go after anything in North America without changing loads. I still enjoy 308, and other smaller calibers, and I’ve owned a 300 mag. But for the best all around hunting cartridge you’ll never beat a 30-06. That said, love your show and just know the 30-06 isn’t going anywhere. I’m sure there will be another Ron Spomer 100 years from now still talking about hunting with the 30-06. 👍

For me cost and availability of powder makes it simple for 30-06 for me and 270. The cost of powder and the limited availability of powder required for modern cartridges makes it simple. Just because it’s newer doesn’t make it worth it. I like Teddy!

Just loaded up some hornady 212 grain eldx with superformance powder. 3 bullets touching at 100 yards and will ring 12” steel at 650 yards consistently. Huge improvement over the factory 150 grain bullets. 1953 Winchester 70 with vortex 6-18x44

30-06 is the tried and true. Combined with the Barnes TTSX or Nosler Accubond bullets. Can't be beat. It was my first cartridge to reload. 150 grain - and 180 bullets, Work the best. Its a reloaders dream. Long range to 600 yards at Camp Perry with 168 and 175 grain bullets. Don't mess with the tried and true. Its the Riflemans cartridge, More than 3 Wars approved.

Come on Ron, what's up with the click bait? We all know the 30–06 is not going anywhere. It works, it has always worked, and the 308 cannot compete with it. But 30–06 will compete with the 300 Winchester magnum when loaded correctly. Without beating you to death even. Lol.

Ron, I don't know how many times I've caught flack for referring to the 1903 shooting the 30-06. I guess we have the military to thank for that with the M1903 remaining after they altered all but about 100 to the 30-06. Thanks for the explanation.

I used to think like most people the 30-06 was nothing special and there were much better all around cartridges. Years back there was a rifle I wanted on a 50% sale, but the only cartridge it was available in was 30-06. I bought it anyway. That rifle has killed two bull elk, a mountain lion, and numerous deer. Performance on elk has been spectacular and obviously does great on deer. If I could only keep one of my rifles, this would be it.

Something I find odd about the early 1900's safari craze is that while the American's were using the 30-06, the German settlers were content with the 9.3 x 62. I would have thought that a round that does pretty much anything the 30-06 can only with bigger and heavier bullets would have drawn the curiosity of the Americans. That's not to say I'm skeptical of the 30-06, not at all as I use one every Fall for Moose, Elk or Deer depending if I was successful in getting a draw. Thoroughly enjoy your content!! - Dave

35 yrs ago I decided to go with the 30-06 when I bought my first hunting rifle because of how versatile the round is. As stated, a huge range of game and applications for the round. I’ve taken deer and elk with it and every time it put them down virtually in their tracks. No need for a different hunting rifle for me.

Not in my lifetime! Started hunting (deer antelope, elk) at age 12 with the .30-06. Still hunting (elk only) at age 69 with the .30-06. The ought-six has done its job well for me over the last 57 years. Got my son hunting with the .30-06 when he was 12. At age 34, he is convinced that it is the cartridge that will do the job for him and is not hyped by the all the new calibers. I doubt it will become "obsolete" in his lifetime as well.

Love you Ron… but give me a break! If 30-30 and 45-70 are becoming relevant again… [because of polymer tipped bullets and improved powder for Lever guns] Know that the 30-06 will survive…. Same with handgun rounds like the 45colt! Of course you can’t take a vintage 45 Colt handgun and shoot modern High pressure rounds out of it! But the modern versions can handle 44 mag [level] loading!

So obviously this could apply to newer releases of the 30-06… and what is more ubiquitous than 30-06??? It simply will NEVER go away. The smart money is on the idea that they will update the spec’s.

I can’t see the 06 going obsolete. I know I am as I still hunt with my 303 Savage, 8x50 Lebel, 38-55, 9.3x62 and many others including the 30-06. All of my single shots, pump actions, lever actions are blue & walnut rifles. All of the new calibers and synthetic guns don’t interest me in the least as there are millions of fully capable hunting guns available on the used market. I handload for 34 calibers and don’t worry about obsolete. Thanks

I shoot 30-06 with 180 grain bullets for deer in Maine. The 180 always does the job 165 is Ok but never a 150 most shots I take are within 100 yards.
30-06 ammo has always been readily available till all ammo became short on availability. I have 3 rifles for hunting all chambered in 30-06.
I am by no means a ballistics or shooting expert like yourself so I have no use for multiple or fancy new calibers.
Enjoy your videos!
