Canon EOS R Hands-on Review

Had an EOS R for 3 years now. Love the sharp images it captures and the colours. For photography, rather than video work, it is superb. My old EF lenses and AF work better on the R than on 5D iii.

Kai, i noticed you posted this vid 5years ago. Will you recommend i purchase the R over an R8? asking because of my budget as well.

How long it takes for download photos in RAW + jpg's? to me is 2 minutes per pair, Is that possible? if I have 350 pics per day it take me 700 minutes!!! WHY? Is there any way to download faster than that?

well i want a good camera that's full frame one that takes great pictures and video. i was told to buy this camera so i want to know a lot about this camera. i want to buy the tamron 24-70 and the tamron 35-150. you said it's only good for taking pictures and not for shooting video. well please tell me a good full frame camera please so i can check it out.

I’ve made peace with the 4K crop, it can actually be a useful tool to get more flexibility out of wider lenses, but I am having a tremendously hard time falling in love with this camera (also the EOS RP) because of the added steps involved in accessing basic functions, particularly auto focus methods. On the R you need to fiddle about a menu to change modes, which is annoying. On both cameras there is no registered AF point, something I LOVED and relied on greatly with my 5Diii, so going from a single point to tracking modes requires at the least on the EOS R a separate button to toggle, and at the least on the RP a separate button and THEN a dial click, followed by a half press of the shutter. They won’t, but I wish they would, just add a registered AF point function to a firmware update so this camera can feel like a part of my hand and work quickly without a “check then change” work flow for AF methods. If I’m still complaining, the 5Diii has a ring finger button near the grip that could switch between one shot and servo by holding it, meaning you never had to use a menu to change them, and you never had to check with mode you were in to grab the mode you wanted, it was purely muscle memory and it was instant. Now on the R and RP I’ve got to hit a secondary button to toggle one shot to servo and back. It just makes the whole process feel cumbersome and slow, and it’s been a huge factor in preventing both cameras from feeling like an “extension of my body” if you will. It burns so many mental calories to pay attention to the auto focus with these stupid things. Please Canon, registered AF point 😭

This review is so confusing to watch and listen to his commentary. His opinion is just utter mixture of pro and cons. His way to describe a product is awful.

That's why I bought m50...til full 4k in future. For 120fps 720p electronic stabilizer..rp no ibis no 24fps...still crop factor.

Be awhile full picture full frame 4k/full hd no crop 120fps 24 fps full featured as standard in future as prices fall become more common....not fully 4k yet.

The slider should been left and right push button instead ..more buttons does not mean ease of use...unless quick changes. Panasonic g95 has potential for budget...more budget lenses adapter mount full sensor better af system...it be greater than m50 for both photo especially video.

Hello. I have one 6d and from yesterday I have a new EOS R. I use Sigma ART 35 and Canon 50, Canon 85. I made some tests for ISO performance with same settings and I saw EOS R is equal with canon 6d up to 6400 ISO. Why? I was thinking EOS R is better than 6d and is equal with 5D mk4 at ISO performance.

It is normal ? Or I have a bad copy ? I know 6d was a very good camera for ISO performance but 5D mk4 was better and EOS R has the same sensor like 5D mk4. Wha it the problem ?
So I must to return the camera to service ?
I had the same light for tests and same objects. I have the latest firmware. 1.6 .

Why are canon lenses so stupidly big?

What is wrong with Canon? Crop factors still a barrier in 2020, big lenses on a small body (who wants to carry big and hevay lenses these days), useless 4K at 24fps and not a 1080 at 120fps.

Looking at this review again after a year. It seems we all got on the same band wagon and bagged the hell out of it. After the firmware updates many more people have started to buy it. Of course the price drop of nearly $1000 dollars since release has helped.

An honest review. Most who review this camera go ga ga for it. I'm glad you pointed out some of the shortcomings.

Recently borrowed an ES R and as a stills camera it is an impressive system if you can live without IBIS. Weird how this camera quirks start to make sense the more you use it.
