It was insane how much of a smoker King Edward VII was. He habitually smoked 10 to 12 cigars and 20 cigarettes per day. No wonder his reign lasted 9 years.

He could easily bankrupt his hosts with his expectations on visiting their home. The Royal family provided a fascinating jolly for ordinary folk but as much as I love the scandal and grandeur, you can not justify such opulence and privilege while people starve.

To the comparison to Charles... Charles is an academic and pretty far removed from Bertie's extreme problems... Charles wasn't a playboy, but had Prince Albert been Charles' father I doubt Charles would've been seen as such a huge disappointment like Bertie was. Charles wanted to marry someone the firm considered unsuitable and he was forced into choosing someone else, be it Diana or any other person on earth, it would've ended in tears and difficulty because in 2023 he is STILL with Camilla. I can't compare Charles to Bertie. Yes Charles can be whiney when we look at his reactions to the attention Diana got but Diana was not suited to him, though she was loved and a Queen of Hearts, it is apples to oranges. They didn't belong together and I doubt they would've been more then a fling, if that, if Charles was not Prince of Wales. I'm not saying how he treated Diana was right, but I see how it happened. Bertie however... he was completely careless and seemed to have all the worst qualities of Victoria in a spoiled, privileged man's body with an extremely hard childhood that didn't have any sensitivity to his learning disabilities, corporal punishment, changes in society extremely quickly and we have a recipe for disaster. I'm surprised he was as popular and successful as he was given all of these circumstances.

Prince Albert did not take the title "Prince Consort" on marrying Queen Victoria.

Lord Melbourne advised the Queen that she should not award any titles at all to Albert other than "HRH".

It was only 17 years later that this title was granted and he had a mere 4 years to enjoy it before his death.

Bertie turned out to be a pretty good king in spite of his undisciplined character; had he been circumspect, I think he could have been a great ruler. Sadly, now Alice Kepel’s descendent has slept her way to the very top in defiance of the morals Queen Victoria, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth held dear. The first born sons from several generations have been a disappointment to their parents. Perhaps this will end with William when he ascends the throne.

As for your ending question, he was both. A charismatic stateman who made strides to improve British relations on the continent, while also being decadent with loose morals.

So this episode can be summed up with "Prince Albert was a horrible human being and should be stricken from any honors he received in life."

I love how edward removed victroria things as soon as she died . She was spiteful to her children . If you ever read her life long journals victoria was so vey selfish & tried to interfere with her children lives even the ones that left the country she medelled in thier lives in such a manner that was appalling

One of the more fortunate children of Queen Victoria. No wonder he turned out like he did with THAT for a mother. He was a
man anyway, living in those times when women were looked upon as chattels and had little personal power. In his position in

They, the Royals, are born into something different. Its not just a family but a business. No one has a choice in what job they want or what schools they want to attend. All this is planned out before their birth. That isnt a life for everyone. But being born into it does make it harder to understand why 'the don't haves" see it as excessive.

In the end he earned the nickname of the "peacemaker" prove to all that he was capable to do his job rightly.

Hello Friends, really liked this one. I'm not a royalist but I do love issues the Royals put in to the spotlight. Now Queen consort Camilla has stuck up for both William and Harry. Camilla also stuck up for Diana that Charles should have stayed at the hospital with Diana while William was there for a golf club accident. She's not the horrible person people make her out to be.

A long reigning queen has a son with a controversial personal life. Glad that never happened again.

I feel that Edward VII had a lot of unfilled potential. In hind-site, he was correct in not supporting the invasion of Denmark by Germany, and since he married Alex as a political alliance some thought should have been put into his position. Queen Vic was strict, authoritarian and imposed a harsh regime on a boy, who might have had ADHD in today’s world and certainly had a very gregarious nature.

History repeated in 2023. The Monarchy has once again, been thrown into doubt. A long reigning loved Queen, now dead. A Prince with personal indiscretions publicly known, now King. How history does repeat itself. 👑
