The Pretenders - State of Independence - 1991 (Better Graphics & Audio)

A very nice cover of Jon Anderson's song he wrote with Vangelis. Jon created the lyrics on the spot as he was singing so the spiritual origins are pretty clear. Checkout Todmobile's version with Jon Anderson himself singing.

This isn't Chrissie Hynde's band the Pretenders. It's the duo Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde, and the more accurate song title is "Spiritual High (State of Independence) Part II," with Parts I & III being mostly instrumental or containing soundbites of MArtin Luther King Jr.

Its good but no one ever did it better than Donna Summer.

Love the subtle tribute to the Owner of a Lonely Heart video with Hynde walking along the crowded street.

Donna Summer's version was a hit in Europe in 1982 and in the 90's.

Michael Jackson did a cover as well, but, I never heard a high quality recording of it. (Original is Jon Anderson and Vangelis)

Man, I love the way the rest of the instrumentation drops out, leaving only Chrissie Hynde's voice and the drum beat, when she repeats "the state of independence shall be" in the chorus. So cool!
