So, I’ve been sitting on a nice $86k emergency fund, and I think it’s time to finally dip my toes into investing. I get it, the stock market is going a little crazy right now, but hey, what’s a little chaos when you’ve got some cash to work with, right? I just need a solid head start! Anyone got tips or should I just follow Howard Marks’ advice and keep my cool?

I was in the investment business for 30 years. One of my first projects was to estimate the impact of cash on a large multi-asset portfolio using professional managers. The results showed that cash in the portfolio dragged down performance by nearly two percentage point annually over a ten year period. We implemented a daily policy of equitizing all portfolio cash using S&P futures. The positive portfolio impact was significant. I realized cash is detrimental to a portfolio’s return for long term investors.

China is probably one of the best opportunities at the moment. Low prices, the manufacturing hub of the world and not expecting that to change in our lifetimes. Just think about this, is it more likely China will recover strong in the next 5 years or not, if so then China is a bargain at the moment. Betting against China is like betting that local products will become affordable in the U.S., that wages will drop more and more over time, that will never happen and the government has no interest in that either, every affordable product comes from either China, India or Asian regions of the world.

It feels like this guy is saying a whole bunch of nothing. Saying the economy is good in the U.S. is a stretch. People are really struggling to make a living and as soon as unemployment goes up (which it is slowly doing right now) the bubble will burst. Stock market is very overpriced right now.

I’ve built a 3-fund portfolio with 33% S&P 500, 33% Total Stock Market, and 33% International, focusing entirely on growth with 100% stocks.
