The LG OLED G4 seems to be having a significant issue with HDMI2 (eARC). Connecting external video sources to HDMI2 (which work on the other the other 3 HDMIs) do not produce an image (but you can hear sound). I have done all the troubleshooting in the world in order to try to isolate the issue to no avail (changing HDMI cables, factory resets, hard resets, removing the HDMIs one by one and re-adding them one by one, turned off HD color). Nothing works. The interesting thing is that this issue temporarily goes away with a hard reset, but it quickly returns.

After unsuccessful attempts at getting effective tech support from LG, I purchased a second 65 G4. Exact same issue! On 4/4/24, LG pushed down an update 3.10.27 which has not resolved the prob(in fact, it's not even addressed in the release notes). I should also point out that the setup I am using is the exact setup I have had with a C9, CX and a C3 just before getting the G4. This HDMI2 issue never occurred with the other TVs.

The devices I am talking about which work on other HDMIs but not in HDMI2 of the above-referenced TVs are Fire TV 4K stick, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV 4K and PS5.

If this is a software issue, then it can hopefully be addressed quickly by LG, seeing that the G4 is their flagship OLED and the problem is with the most important HDMI - the HDMI2. However, if this is a hardware problem (difficult to believe that both units were defective - in fact, I heard from another LG customer that he is having the same issue with a 83 G4), then LG has its work cut out for it. I can't think of many people who would be willing to wait for a hardware fix which would require for a part to be replaced by a tech's visit on a brand new TV which has been lauded by LG as ground-breaking.

All this would be very easily clarified by LG, but up until this point, it seems to be pushing customers (at least me) to an endless loop of bad customer service and then either that (a) the unit is defective and sine it's under the 30 (or 60 in my case) day return period, it can be returned, or (b) to send a tech to diagnose the issue. What exactly the tech would do beyond what i have done to troubleshoot has not been communicated by LG (unless they believe I would be conformable in having the tech open up a brand new TV and start exploring . . .).

This is very disappointing. I hope that the various reviewers take note of this very easily identifiable problem (all you have to do is connect a few video sources into HDMI2 and observe for a few hours while turning the TV off and on an again). This way, the interested customers would be informed and LG would provide some information on this issue.

Considering this G4 or the new Samsung S95D in 77". A big consideration though is the sound and I would like the new Q990D Samsung atmos soundbar after being very satisfied with the Q90R that I got 4 years ago. I've read this latest soundbar is now far superior to my old Q90R and I've also viewed some poor reviews of the LG flagship soundbar system. The Q symphony on the Samsung TV that can be used with the soundbar for extra immersion and the object tracking feature is swaying me towards the Samsung TV. For myself the sound is as much a key factor as the picture quality although I don't want to go the AVR and seperate wired speaker route for aesthetic reason's. This LG could be a stellar TV and debatably a little better than the S95D but will the TV and Soundbar integration on the all Samsung setup outweigh the possible minor advantages of this LG screen? Looking to make my purchase around September time so I'm still open minded and looking forward to viewing plenty of side by side comparison reviews before I make my decision. I must say I've been very happy with my 5 year old LG OLED but I've read they have improved considerably since my last purchase.

KG thanks for touching upon the subject of Multi View in your video. Not much is talked about that particular subject or info is shared. So it is possible to view 2 hdmi sources at the same, which is good news. Is it possible to do a side by side or PiP test in your next stream?

Ok guys let's jump off from the hype train for a second and think about it:
Could the G4 be really that good?
I bought an A95L a couple of weeks ago, upgraded from my A1E oled (sonys first ever from 7 years ago) and I am not saying it's not good, of course it is really good, but nothing game changing. I mean I am a tv/home theater enthusiast and I have noticed some quite big improvements but they are 7 years apart from eachother.
Can't imagine anything game changing from let's say a G3 to G4 or G4 compared to the A95L.

S95D could have been the king if it was glossy.

It's still technically the best performing panel (gen3) and the matte coating is even limiting some of its brightness

@Swecan76
@Swecan76 - 12.04.2024 08:55

If you play games on Windows and have Nvidia RTX card you can circumvent the limited SDR brightness by putting windows into HDR and the TV should unlock peak brightness because HDR signal is sent to the TV. Of course that usually don't look great in a non-HDR game. But that is where the RTX HDR comes into play that you can use to make SDR game into near HDR level.
So now that SDR game is even better and brighter. I don't know for sure if this works I don't have the TV, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. Windows HDR turned out IS and HDR signal sent to the TV. So one would think the G4 just sees HDR and enables HDR settings.

I wonder if you can take a 1 min video of content "rolling" with Ai picture pro on. Then rewind and roll the same content with it off and then "stitch" the footage side by side and then pixel peep and see if it's actually doing anything as in moving content. Like my previous comment I have a feeling this is something that is done "on the fly" as the picture is coming in and it process and "enhances it".

Just an Idea.

Ответить
@Swecan76
@Swecan76 - 12.04.2024 08:44

With the AI picture acting like it works and not work. I think that type of setting is mostly "working" in content moving, as in not on a pause screen. I think it needs the incoming data to do it's thing. It dynamically on the fly changes and enhances. So at times when changing on a pause screen it might have information to change. But in other times it might not show. Just some speculation.
I think the G4 seems pretty darn cool. I am one that would watch in Cinema and standard and crank it a bit and use DTM etc. I want to use all it offers. For me Filmmaker mode just removes the things that make these TVs stand apart. Because it kills all processing and aims to have same brightness levels and so on. Why get a TV that can do "more" when you're going to limit it.

I would have more fun watching HDR movie with way brighter highlights and colors and so on, than muted. I might not go as far as Vivid. But I'd definitely use DTM and try out AI picture pro etc.

Thanks for review. Maybe do a little more gaming videos of G4 before you're done with it?

What about the colors though? Is it as rich as the colors on the s90d? I had seen a few reviewers say that even the c1 has richer colours than the g3 so I'm guessing the colours are even less richer this year due to the higher brightness. Though the colour red seems to be improved. Also what about the 3d depth? I have heard it's the best on any tv.
