Hey everyone! This video took so much longer to make compared to my usual content. I basically made seven illustrations just for this video! I also might make some of them prints in the future... we'll see! Thanks for watching <3

really cool!

i kind of swapped from becomming an artist over to the whole design bubble about 4-5 years ago! long story short i am at my last year of a graphic design apprentice ship (takes 4 years after graduating artschool) which is centered in brand identity, packaging and for me still illustrations, graphical animations ect. im super happy and organised my first exhibition just recently.

thats my story summed up super quick for u :)

I really enjoy this video and thank you fro sharing your journey with us. I just graduated art school as well and I decide to go through a different path. I decided to join the industry as a concept artist and is working well for me. I admire that you are able to do your own work as a career and have the dicipline and mental fortitude to power through. As soon as I graduated I felt an existential crisis that stopped me from doing and enjoying art. However once I started working as a concept artist I felt that I was able to enjoy my art again.

Anyways, great video and will look forward of your art journey continuing on.

art in college is resentment from going into film editing and waiting hours for stuff to render I did enjoy photography with a 35 mm wish I can find a photo enlarger. College opened up loads of ideas of stuff for multimedia though

This video is amazing, thank you very much for making it.

I don't know if this is something you are aiming for, but this video would form a great starting point for a children's book.

As someone who missed the art boat as a kid myself, and who is now raising a marvelously creative child, I've noticed many children's books about art are actually art history books that talk mainly about fine arts and the ideas behind art movements.

They don't talk about doing art as a hobby or working in other types of art jobs (like illustrators).

And they especially don't talk about the aspects most artists enjoy about art: the actual drawing and painting and making aspects, instead focusing on the ideas behind them.

It's taken me so long to realize that most artists mostly enjoy creating art, not thinking of concepts or ideas or doing something super innovative.

Everyone can draw, even if they don't have ideas of their own and can't create something that looks professional right away (or ever).

No wonder I always assumed I wouldn't be able to do it, nor even enjoy it. And I was so wrong. And I've noticed the same is true of many other people.

Wouldn't it be great for children (and adults) to come across a book talking about the joys of making art, the journeys art could take us on, and the very human challenges we may face on the way and how to approach them? Even better if that book is filled with charming vibrant art like yours.

This video reminded me of when art was just for fun. I’ve been taking a long break from drawing since I’ve been busy with homework, and quite honestly, I haven’t liked the last few drawings I made. This video helped me remember the joy of art. Thank you for that

This is amazing it’s great look back on all the years and see where u have grown Unfortunately for me I missed stage 2 and maybe a bit of 3 bc I just stopped doing art completely bc I just got overwhelmed with everything and my parents were pushing me too hard and not letting me take it at my own pace but I took it back up just before lockdown happened and I started to feel better like I had more freedom to express myself without the constant feeling of someone watching over my shoulder.
Thanks to anyone who read this and if u want to check out my art pls let me know

I can relate to the first few stages as ones I experienced, but then I had a parent die and for a long time I stopped doing art beyond doodling now and again. In the last year or so I've gotten back into it as a hobby and that's likely where it will remain which I've come to accept as absolutely fine.

Can I ask what you use to capture drawing in procreate? (if it is anything other than the built in screen recorder in the Ipad)

Thanks for sharing!

I've been playing around with work days, I tend to get really good results on Sunday, normally like to take a weekday off. Some days your body just needs a break & you can't always predict which day that's going to be. Also something I didn't notice when working for someone else is just how fatigued I get during PMS. All last year I was getting annoyed at these slow weeks until I realized it was PMS 🤦 Like oh no it's not cool to be beating myself up over a normal cycle.

For social media, I wasn't getting shown for so long, I thought maybe it's my quality or what I'm working on? But then reels I thought were low quality were getting lots of views. I started experimenting by deleting videos that got like 10 or less views and reposting 2 days later & they were getting 100s of views. It seems like Instagram won't show my videos if I upload daily? Might be hashtags or the audio I'm still trying to figure out what's going on 😢 but I'm feeling a lot better now knowing it's not the content 😅

our tip isnt the best or really even a tip... but as an overworked artist who feels guilty about not working and also guilty about working on our weekends:

we just smoke weed to calm down and let us just do it

it helped us stop caring and just continue doing what we wanna do (even if its working bc we just wanna)

I loved hearing about your art journey! Here's mine for anyone interested:

I've always been creative, but I didn't really start drawing until I was towards the end of elementary school and I got my first sketchbook. In middle school I would doodle animals and made up creatures in my sketchbook and any paper I could get my hands on. When I was a highschool freshman I wanted to get more serious about my art so I started using references. After a year of trying to copy photos, I started learning anatomy. I've never seen myself improve so quickly in anything. Currently I'm 17 and still a long way from where I want to be but I've come SOO far in 3 years and I'm so proud of myself.

Rest is not given the credit it deserves. I think you're onto something when you say slowing down makes you more efficient. You absolutely need and deserve to rest in order to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

And don't be to caught up in figuring it all out - I've been getting by for years, merely cleverly disguised as a responsible adult only when absolutely necessary. 😄

HI there Jel. I can identify with your guilt about not working when you think you should be. I am a full time carer for my wife-we are both retired. However, my mind is still locked into working during the week n relaxing at the weekends but when your are retired "there are no weekends". The working week used to be typically 40 hours. Why not decide how many hours a week you want to work and record the hours you do work, when you reach your figure, then stop. Go to a different room-get away from your work for a while. Don't "take the work home" or you won't get your break. The self discipline that got you to be where you are now needs to be employed to maintain your work/life balance. Hope this helps. Best wishes to your progress.

I relate to the focussing on two things at the same time. Somtimes it's very hard to balance work and school- at work they expect me to have all the room in my head to think creatively about how to make the company and our department better, but I just want to focus my brain on my studies. That's aside from friends and family that expect you to spend time with them, eventhough you're so busy. I'm excited to start my working life at a job that I love and have studied for. It will take 4 more years though, since I just got accepted to university. I really want to become a psychologist, so it's gonna be worth it in the end! Wish me luck 🍀

I really want to get back into a graphic career, but other work has to come first. I also don’t like the burn out phase and self doubt because I feel I have lost my skill. Am I Too critical?
Take care and enjoy the great career opportunities that social media provides to kids these days. Looks like you just provided another pile of stickers!

I think the hardest part about self-employment is taking breaks. You get in the habit of drawing, so you actually feel weird on a day when you don't draw at all. I actually feel anxious on days when I have no project to work on, so I'm constantly working on something a little everyday. Maybe that's a good thing, I never do all-nighters anymore, but also there hasn't gone a day in the past few years when I haven't drawn something.

I am also inviting published illustrators, illustrating writers for a chat. As far as taking time off when self employed, I've found it helps to pick a number of days or hours for yourself and then it doesn't matter what day you take that time as long as you give yourself that time.
