As long as the younger party isn't obviously being victimized or taken advantage of, i really don't give a shit about age gaps in fiction tbh. It absolutely matters irl, but in fiction? Nah. don't care. Is the material good? is the dynamic good? do they learn from each other? do they make each other better? if yes, cool.

I also think it really depends on the demographic the material is meant for. It's not like it's ACTUALLY POSSIBLE to date a several hundred year old vampire for example, so i don't really care. I don't think people who watched the vampire diaries for example, were suddenly like "oh let me go out and date a 40 year old, because clearly age gaps don't matter". nah. If they did it's a problem on their end. People need to be able to separate fiction and reality.

9 year age gap is still nothing in india. All my older cousin sisters have 8-10 years age gap with their husbands. My parents have 14.. Quite a few of my older male cousins have wives younger than me . Even my youngest uncle married someone younger than me with a 12 year gap. It feels so odd to call her aunt.

I'm okay with an age gap in paranormal/fantasy genres because of fantasy species aging differently, etc. But what I can't get over is the fact that the female lead is usually like 19-22 and hooking up with a 300+ y/o. Like there's a big difference between a 19 y/o hooking up with a 500 year old vampire and a 30 y/o hooking up with a 500 year old vampire and that difference is maturity and a fully developed frontal lobe

It works much better if the youngest person is 28 or above so it doesn't feel like grooming- she gaps with people well out of their vulnerable self discovery period is fine, an adult and a teenager is not

Writing a scifi where there's a race that lives to about 50 years, which means they grow a lot faster than humans. The part where I expect people to feel icky is when they're confronted with how an 8-year old of that race is the same as a human 16-year old, raging hormones and all. And yes, it's a great drama and confrontation, and, uh, not culture-shock, species-shock I guess, where they spell it out for the humans; the race in question not only grows fast, they learn and mature fast, for all intents and purposes, that 8-year old is just like a human 16 year old, so the humans in question has to learn to be objective on that matter and treat the thing on individual terms.

As a flip-table, another race lives twice as long, and they sometimes have reservations about humans that are "only" 20 years of age, but being an old sophisticated race they're more intellectual about it.

As for why I put it in my world to begin with, I thought it was interesting from perspectives of world-building, cultures, and conflict between species, and the whole "long lived aliens" was done to death so I wanted to try with a shorter life span, shake things up and make it interesting.
:-)

For me, if it’s an immortal being that has an impossible existence and impossible age, there’s no reason to apply human logic to it. No one is going to be tricked at 18 into marrying a 5000 year old hottie. It’s why the thing that matters to me with something like twilight is a bad dynamic filled with Mormon Puritanism, not that Edward is an immortal high schooler.

Currently reading a fantasy book where I was very uncomfortable with the age gap in the romance (100 year difference, plus an extreme power difference) until I got halfway through and realized the discomfort was the point and the love interest is actually the villain.

Recently I’ve been reading Lynsay Sands’ Argeneau novels (science/Atlantis vampires) I think the one thing that makes it work so well is that yes there’s sometimes millennia age gap but everyone is I think 25+.

With 9 years, context still matters.

30 and 39 is fine.

16 and 25 most certainly is not.

✨age is just a number✨

It's SO real that contemporary's the only one even just thinking about it. Also I now really want to write a book about a couple where the (slightly!) younger one is in their twenties and behaves like their age, but looks like 92!
Ha, take that, society!

This remembers me of a story i strated and will never finish.
Soooo, one of the two is a 10 000 years old dragon about to become immortal (chinese dragon), he meets a human around 20 years (and married) who's wounded and he basicly saves his life and helps him heal. He falls in love for the human. So the human, to thank him, has se× with him (is the dragon volunteer ? Huh... i dont remember). Yeeey... (i already said the human is married). But he (the human) ACTUALLY does it because his spouse (a dude too, but he's called empress in the title of the book, so i'll just stick with spouse) has a chronic illness, and he can heal him with the scales of a dragon, so he wants to keep the dragon under his control... so : he charms the dragon who saved him and fell in love for him to ripe his scales off his body. Oh, no, sorry, he makes him ripe the scales off his own body. AND pretty much uses him to fuck whenever he wants. OF COURSE, the dragon doesnt know he is married. And OF COURSE, there's MPREG and the dragon is pregnant with the child of this dude.
And I believe they end up in a "and lived happily together ever after and had many children" way.
I'll search the name, if anyone wants
