Eh, I think these definitions were made up more recently. Back in the early 80's speed/thrash was pretty much used interchangeably, I think the thrash moniker got more popular because it sounds better, I don't remember speed metal being used much after the mid 80's. A lot of the 'speed' metal bands you used as examples were usually just called metal. Could say the same thing about death/black metal though it quickly changed to black being bands that had satanic leanings.
ОтветитьTo tell you the truth dude I haven't heard one difference from the other to me it sounds all the same I've been listening to this kind of music on my life
Ответитьthrash is simple....take hardcore punk and NWOBHM put in a mixer and your got it. Speed is a term that was used back in the day but the term seems useless today I think.
ОтветитьI've always thought of early Exciter and Abattoir as being more in the thrash category, but whatever you call them, all of the bands featured are awesome.
ОтветитьThrash=more punk influenced, rawer, heavier, faster.Vocals are more shouty, growled, shrieked. Megadeth are heavy/ speed metal. They even said it themselves, "State of the art speed metal band". I never viewed them as a thrash band anyways. Far too light, slow for this style
Speed=NWOBHM influenced with a bigger emphasis on melody, influenced a lot from Priest. Vocally they tend to be closer to traditional metal vocalists.
Speed is just heavy metal but faster. Take a classic heavy metal band put the tempo up that's speed metal. Thrash is its own thing
ОтветитьiLife long metal lover and this is the most boring ever !!! This is when I feel metal heads aren’t that
bright. Oh shut it. Just rock out
It also seems thrash has this "bouncy" quality not usually found in speed.
ОтветитьGood list👇
ОтветитьI think you're over thinking this. It's all just fucking great.
ОтветитьLyrics
ОтветитьSpeed metal is more like power metal...opera singing style....
ОтветитьYou know it's still confusing because Exciter almsot sounds like Kill Em All era Metallica
ОтветитьI still can't separate because this sub genres is crossing over all the time. Its questionable that you can ever separate. For me good heavy metal is good heavy metal. 🤘🎸
ОтветитьThere is no genre thing as speed metal. It is only a style that exists in kind of genres
ОтветитьI kind of like those 3 Thrash-Speeders or Speed-Thrashers.
ОтветитьSame thing different name. Really splitting hairs with this definition.
ОтветитьI never knew anyone that called Metallica thrash, then or now. The first 2 records were very raw but once signed to a major label just straight up heavy metal.
ОтветитьI would say you are pretty on the money with that description. The big exception to that would be Anthrax. Joey sounded like he belonged in journey, than in a thrash band.
Which is one of the reasons I never cared for Anthrax. The music on the eighties records was great. I just preferred the hetfield, araya, chuck billy, even Mustaine over Joey. And I like dickinson and halford, I can even tolerate Goeff Tate in small doses. But joey just seemed like he should be in an AOR eighties band then in anything remotely close to metal.
They were so hoping that john bush would work out in anthrax. Because that's when I started paying attention to them. I've seen anthrax with john probably over ten times and him.
Unfortunately, for anthrax, they forgot how to write thrash music anymore and started writing Groove and alternative metal. Alienating their fan base. I never understood the hate for john bush, He was a great singer in armoured saint and was as to be in metallica twice.
Metal is just great, I don't really care which subgenre it is, for that matter music is great! We just try to classify things so people get a better idea of what we're talking about.. just my opinion , keep listening to great music!!
Ответитьit´s mor easy. Speed is only an adjective. Then it goes the Substantive: heavy, thrash or power.
Ответитьspeed metal is not a genre only an adjective to the principal style. Thinking at this way, all is more clear and easy. IMHO
ОтветитьI agree with this definition. Its really annoying how black-thrash bands have appropriated the name "speed metal" these days where basically anything from Slayer to Venom is considered 'speed'. IMO it needs: shredding guitars, high tempo drums, and at least some falsetto vocals stretching upper range. Its meant to be an extreme of heavy metal.
ОтветитьSpeed metal is in between thrash and power.
ОтветитьThrash has more aggressive vocals
ОтветитьSpeed Metal = traditional metal sped up vs Thrash Metal = speed metal crossed with hardcore punk. Case closed.
ОтветитьI still don't get people who say Megadeth are not thrash but speed by this definition... What are they talking about?!
ОтветитьIt's like thrash bands listened to a lot of punk growing up, and speed bands listened to Judas Priest.
ОтветитьCoroner is more Speed Metal but with Thrash Vocals.
Ответить🎸🤘🏼💀🎸🤘🏼💀🎸🤘🏼💀
ОтветитьGreat video man! I'm not very familiar with speed metal, so this was quite educational for me.
ОтветитьI never knew why Anvil is categorised as a speed metal band while they in my opinion just play traditional heavy metal. Of course there are also other traditional metal bands they have some faster songs but are never called Speed Metal 😉
On the other hand to me Agent Steel is a typical examble of 100% Speed Metal😅 and Metal Church 100% US Power Metal. Well, so what 😉
Megadeth is not thrash. Its Heavy Rock. Like Metallica. But Demolition Hammer, Exodus, Destruction, Violence. Kreator ...
This is THRASH
I think you should also do a video explaining the differences between thrash and groove metal, while they do have similarities, some people confuse Pantera as thrash.
ОтветитьSpeed metal aka Fast metal
ОтветитьI prefer thrash metal, Metallica and the New Zealand band Devilskin. Not a fan of speed metal.
ОтветитьDon't need a video to explain this. Its in the names of the genres. Speed metal is majority fast, thrash metal is majority heavy. I've heard thrashy speed metal bands that had a little more thrash(heavy) in their sound than most speed metal bands of their time. Like for example, slaughter from canada or early kreator were total fast as hell speed metal with the occasional really heavy parts in a song that really stood out. Early metallica was very fast, but the majority of their sound was very heavy(thrash) with melodies and hooks but still faster than a band like anthrax or testament(both thrash).
Ответитьagree
ОтветитьWhat I got from this video is Speed metal is basically just Iron Maiden but faster
ОтветитьWho to f₺#@ cares about this
ОтветитьI kind of always thought speed metal specifically referred to motorhead's penchant for the drug
ОтветитьI think one if the main differences is musicianship and technicality. I associiate speed metal with bands like Anvil and Exciter. Their playing is less tight and more loosey-goosey, wide-open riffs and open hi-hat. Thrash is much tighter, more palm muting, overall better players, and more ambitious songwriting and lyrical themes. Speed metal has a certain “cheese” factor, while thrash can be taken more seriously. However, there is crossover and some bands that ended up being thrash or power metal, had more of a speed metal sound and feel early one. Think Voivod and Running Wild as examples. One could argue that Venom is speed metal, but it’s not that easy. Venom had such a huge influence on thrash, speed, black, and death metal. NWOBHM influenced both speed and thrash, but has more in common with speed metal, and thrash borrows from both NWOBHM and punk, just like the guy says. The way I see it, everything comes from Black Sabbath and traditional heavy metal. Then you have Judas Priest and Motorhead. Then you have NWOBHM and Venom. Thrash is born from all the previous, plus the punk influence. Speed metal gives way to power metal. Thrash bands like Kreator and Sodom borrow the lyrical themes from Venom and Mercyful Fate, to produce blackened thrash. Death metal grows out of thrash. Doom metal gives way to stoner, sludge, and drone metal. Doom coalesces with death metal to get death-doom. Hroove rises from thrash. It just goes on and on, this incestuous metal family.
ОтветитьAnyone that plays guitar can tell the difference between speed and thrash and power metal. If you don't play guitar then it's up to your ear to discern the difference. Some thrash metal bands have a few speed metal songs. However, speed metal is a very tiny part of metal, whereas thrash is a very large part of metal. Early on speed, thrash, power metal were all just called speed metal, but then over a fairly short span of time the definitions were refined. Speed metal went from huge (encompassing 3 actual styles) to being just a tiny entity when thrash and power metal were weeded out from it. Most famous speed metal band, and most true to the style, was Exciter.
ОтветитьOne of my Megadeth shirts from 1988 says the definitions of Megadeth 1 A unit equal in measure to the death of a million people by nuclear explosion, and 2 is the world's state of the art SPEED metal band
ОтветитьI like to think speed metal as a more faster form of heavy metal, and thrash as more of a fast metallic punk type of thing
ОтветитьDark Angel - Darkness Descends = Pure Thrash Metal
Megadeth - Peace Sells = Pure speed Metal
Who following iron maiden patern lean to thrash, who following judas priest, deep purple, led zeppelin, sweet, queen etc lean to speed metal. It is feel power speed in motorhead
ОтветитьWhen it comes to speed metal, Helloween - Walls of Jericho is my favorite.
ОтветитьSpeed metal: Anvil , Exciter , first album of Anthrax , first album of Halloween , Painkiller from Judas Priest and some albums of Accept
Thrash metal : First three albums of Metallica , first four of Sepultura , first three of Kreator , Sodom , Destruction , Slayer , Dark Angel , Sadus , Assorted Heap , Demolition Hammer , Morbid Saint , Infernal Majesty , Exodus , Onslaught , Testament , Nuclear Assault etc...
