Red-right-returning does not mean that you go to the right. That means you keep the red buoy on the right side of your vessel and you go to the left of it

Depoe Bay Harbor Oregon (Famous for One flew over the Cuckoos Nest). One vessel at a time and you have to time open ocean swells and navigate the rocks 10 ft. to either side.

Oregon Inlet on the east coast and the Columbia river inlet on the west have historically been known as the most difficult inlets by most! The coast guard have their most robust training vessels at each inlet!

"The things I saw on the Columbia River that night will forever stay me because of their monstrous dimensions." -Ron Jansson

A quote from Commander Wilkes, US Navy (ca. 1860) sums it up nicely: “Mere description can give but little idea of the terrors of the bar of the Columbia; all who have seen it have spoken of the wilderness of the ocean and the incessant roar of the waters, representing it as one of the most fearsome sites that can possibly meet the eye of a sailor.”

I can speak for the bar, I was stationed at CG station Cape Disappointment. I have seen first hand what mother nature will throw at you when she gets angry ..and it can happen in minutes. It'll go from calm 4-6' rollers to 15+ in a matter of minutes, it's a beautiful place but it is not a place to be messed with.

We used to call Indian River inlet the jackhammer, because it will pound you into the rocks the minute you screw up, and with a big boat that's about all you have with engine failure,a minute or two till your in trouble.

I been in and around commercial fishing my entire life. I went fishing on 16 bass boat in the biggest lake in my state and I live on Gulf Coast, its a Brackish water lake. The wind was at 7 mph to the west, and the swells were throwing that bass boat around.

Only ships need a bar pilot for the Columbia and it’s not just because of the bar it’s because of the channel up the river. The channel is narrow and we get ships stacked up waiting in line to get a pilot. We’ve taken a 12’ boat with a 9.9 over the bar a couple times and it wasn’t really that bad

Haulover Inlet isn't is as bad as they make it sound ! Valentino Boats has a 52 footer that dominates the Oregon Inlet. Which will prove the same for all the rest.

In 74 I got to take the wheel of a 78 foot Longline steel boat over the Columbia Bar on a outgoing tide. The Bar was closed because of a big storm ravaging the Oregon coast in Nov. 74.
It took 2 attempts to get back over the Bar about 3 weeks later. The whirlpools, and large waves coming from every direction was insane!😅
Our boat came within yards of being tossed on the jetty rocks! We made it out a few hours later and survived the huge storm and delivered the boat to it's owner in Seattle Washington..
Last repro job for me!😅

I live in a hill overlooking the number 2 one. The Greymouth bar. Seen dead people on beach, upturned boats, a single fisherman's gumboot, yeah, its a beauty. I've been out on one of the boats in the vid. The Cook Canyon... Puked the whole way in

Red right return definitely does not mean what you said!
You said "if you see a red buoy keep to the right"
The correct instructions are: " if you see a red buoy keep the buoy to your right"
Anyone who followed your instructions would be outside of the safe channel

I've fished out of West Port, which is Gray's Harbor, north of the Columbia River..... and even that bar can be rough! My dad was a deckhand for a charter fishing boat and I've gone out many times. It's a 55ft boat, made for that kind of weather....and I still managed to get nearly washed overboard 😶

15ft rolling waves are the biggest (they aren't the 30+ Deadliest Catch type waves) but, when the wind is bad, you're facing those 15ft rollers as they break over the bar.... it gets a bit rough.

Astoria area, though (the Columbia River Inlet)....that is a a scary bar to cross. My dad fishes there all the time, though. 🤷‍♂️

off topic but, incidently: Sig Hansen from Deadliest Catch used the charter fishing company my dad worked for when he wanted to go recreational fishing. 👍

I've used the Boyton Beach Inlet hundreds of times to go scuba diving. Not too dangerous going out, but if there are seas above 3 feet and you're coming in it funnels the waves together into these really steep rollers. The dive boat (Loggerhead) I used to go out on actually went stern over bow coming in one time. I wasn't on it though. But it was underpowered and couldn't go faster than the waves.

The first time I crossed the columbia river bar, Illwaco, I was about 12, in a 17 ft Olympic. Was pretty spooky for a kid. My dad was nuts. When he wanted to go fishing he went. The Westport bar is pretty crazy also. North of the Columbia. I have crossed that one also. Low tide at either and a swell is sketchy.

This video is retarded. I've been through all of these inlets, none of them are any big deal other than the Columbia river bar. Never been to New Zealand so I don;'t know about that, but all these Florida inlets are butter, and no mention of Ponce inlet which is known to be the worst.

These inlets are used hundreds if not thousands of times a day without incidents , the narration of “a collision is pretty much impossible” is ridiculous. Watch “Boat Zone”s channel, it does get really rough sometimes and sometimes boats sink but by far its a rare thing. I hate these channels that jsut spew BS with zero fact in the video.
