Adding any kind of left foot pattern into a groove just sends things off the rails in a hurry. I play double bass pretty well but playing the hihat pedal or just keeping simple time with it always throws me off badly.

I feel like my hands and right foot are fairly independent but my left foot needs a ton of work. Thanks for this.

As a guitar player learning drums, this is how I need it broken down. Thank you! And the high hat adjustment... why have none of my drummer friends clued me in on that one?

Oof. It’s not just reprogramming my hardwired ‘hats on foot are on TWO and FOUR only. And that’s on a good day…’
It’s also about prising my kick away from the safe haven stomping on the ONE for a bedrock reference point when something is challenging

I’m a returning drummer, having played semi-professionally to an advanced-intermediate level (being honest, I’ve never been professional/session ability). I went back to education had to sell my gear and now have a young family I have recently been in a position to buy a kit and get back to playing after a 12 year hiatus.
I’m now relearning my muscle memory and learning things I should have learnt properly back in the day.
Your tuition videos are great dude, proper grass roots skills that I can see will give a fantastic foundation from which to build.
Keep them coming matey and thank you!
🤘

thanks so much from a beginner ! I started one year ago, being 64 years old. Crazy, maybe, but never had so much fun before in my life. I live in Paraguay, where it is hard to find professional teachers, who are patient enough with an older lady, smile ... seeing your footwork now, base drum and hi-hat, you left me dumbfounded but eager to get this. I may need more time than the Youngsters, but your explanations are great. Thanks a lot, gracias y saludados ... Gabriele

Thanks for the tips Mr. Brown! Now i can get my left foot involved instead of it just sitting on the hi hat as it has the last two months. I am doing the drumeo method but that foot has been planted firmly and i am starting to freak out as i know all sorts of crap with my other limbs but the left foot just sits there.

As a drummer over 40 years, nobody can't imagine how difficult this is for me. Always used the hi-hat otherwise than on two and four. I'm crazy mad I feel like a big fool, my level is far under a beginner, while my mistakes are like burned in deeply. BUT, I'm starting now and keep on practicing. Thank you Rob, and greetings from the Netherlands. 🤘

I’ve started to count with the left foot over everything that im playing, its improved my timing massively and im getting better at it quite quickly.

One thing that’s difficult though is half open hi hat. I bounce my heel when im playing it closed, and i move it back for an open hi hat, but its really hard working out what to do with a crispy half open hi hat, any advice?

I’m not sure if I’m a beginner, intermediate or somewhere in between? I don’t have any aspirations to be in a band, just played sporadically as a hobby for years. I really enjoy it but I’ve always felt inadequate re the left leg which I rarely use…. Until now! Thanks so much for this exercise! It’s allowed me to get old lefty in on the action and now I’m combining it with a couple of other things. Having some really nice, fluid/magic moments on the drums now that all four limbs are involved! A thousand thanks 🙏

How should my left foot be placed on the pedal? I usually keep my foot flat (heel down) and just lift my toe when I want an open hat. But when I want to use my left foot to keep time on the quarter notes, I find my foot playing heel up. Thanks for any advice!
