In 1999 I bought a Whirlpool side by side with Ice Maker and water in the door and it's still going today. Ice maker never had a problem.

My ice maker failed, but after 14 years. The fan iced up and stopped working. So yes, they will fail but 14 years is darn good run.

Also need to look at how much room the door needs to swing open. Zero clearance may be needed if you are against a wall.
